  • Latest Affenpinscher Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Does anybody else have an Affenpinscher?
They don't seem too unusual and look like an ordinary small dog with a lot fur but they seem to be rare, at least in the US. We picked ours up over a year ago and he has tons of personality and is a lot of fun. Just wondered if I was the only one who had one, that's all.
Answer:My friend has one, they are pretty rare.

  • Should I take a year old affenpinscher?
Friends are giving him away, I have two boys, good boys but boys none the less. They are 6 and 4 respectively. We can give it attention but I was wondering if anyone has experience with the breed and what I may expect. Shedding? Good with children? Accident prone?
Answer:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/affenpinscher.htm " This friendly little dog enjoys being with its family. It needs consistent, firm training. Make sure there is some variety in the training so the dog does not become bored. They learn commands very quickly. Some may be difficult to housebreak. They are not recommended for very young children, as Affenpinschers tend to guard their food and toys." "This little dog does best with a family who likes entertainment and has a very good sense of humor." "The Affenpinscher's harsh coat should never be clipped short because this ruins the coat for many years. It should be brushed and combed weekly and it may be necessary to pluck it. A dog-trimming specialist usually does this but it is possible to learn how to do it yourself. Show dogs require stripping. Hair sometimes grows in the corners of the eyes, causing irritation; they should be dealt with promptly. This breed sheds little to no hair." The one thing you have to ask the friend is, if this dog has been raised around children? Most of the time small dogs are NOT recommended for smaller children as they are more tempermental and fragile. You will have to teach your kids the 'dog rules.' Like, no touching the dog while he/she eats .. no touching while the dog is sleeping etc. etc. You should try a 'trial run' with the dog and see how things work out. Terriers are hyper so would probably be a good exercise for your 2 boys and a plus is they shed little to no hair (but need grooming, see above) .. and as long as you watch the dog like you watch your kids .. they should be no more accident prone than your kids. It would be nice to offer this dog a home, but also ask WHY they are giving them away. If you cannot take the dog, or the arrangement does not work out .. you can contact this person and they will give you some numbers of local Affenpinscher Rescues where the dog will have a MUCH better chance of getting adopted and not put to sleep in a shelter: http://www.affenpinscher.org/rescue.htm Hope that helps!

  • What is the dog type, Affenpinscher like?
My family is looking into buying an Affenpinscher puppy. I would just like to know any information from anyone who maybe has one or knows a bit about them. Things like what is their personaltity like? Or what are any medical issues they may have? How intelligent are they? Do they bark alot? Are they ok to be left home alone? Would they get along with other pets (We have a dog and 2 cats)? Would they be a good dog with us living at a beach? Can we leave outside during the day when we are out? etc etc Just any information would be really helpful
Answer:They are smart, mischevious little active dogs. They are part of the terrier group so my assumption is yes they may bark more than normal. Health wise-looks pretty healthy Its your choice, i brought my other dog with me when i went to adopt a puppy since i wanted to make sure the dog and puppy got along...maybe you can do that for your dog. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affenpinscher http://www.affenrescue.org/ Affenpinschers What's good about 'em What's bad about 'em If you want a dog who... Is small, easy to carry, and doesn't take up much space Looks like a wiry-coated terrier Is spunkier than most toys (his terrier background) Takes himself very seriously (which can be amusing to watch) Makes a keen watchdog Doesn't need a lot of exercise Doesn't shed very much An Affenpinscher may be right for you. If you don't want to deal with... The fragility of toy breeds (see below) Suspiciousness toward strangers and strange dogs Stubbornness (a mind of his own) Regular brushing and trimming of the rough wiry coat Housebreaking difficulties Barking Waiting lists (hard to find) An Affenpinscher may not be right for you.

  • What shall I call my new affenpinscher?
I have just got a girl Affenpinscher (a small black breed) and we cannot agree on a name! Her brother is called 'Rocco'. Current names up for discussion include: Pebbles (goes with Rocco I think - ie rocks and pebbles) Maisy Daisy Blossom but we can't find one that instantly clicks and we both like... any ideas?
    Answer:daisy

  • What does the Affenpinscher(or Monkey-faced Pinscher) and Standard Schnauzer bred together produce?
They produced a very common AKC registered dog today. They vary in color from Black, salt and pepper, and black and silver.
Answer:I think Emery has it. The Miniature Schnauzer is descended from the Standard Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher, a toy dog with a terrier-like attitude with perhaps a dollop of Poodle thrown in.
