Latest Afghan Hound Frequently Asked Questions:
I am asking this as I feel the present gene pool is drying out and fresh blood is needed to keep the mountain type Afghan as it is first imported by Lady Amps. Does any other country in the East or in Asia have working, hunting Afghan Hounds (coat is no problem). I don't mean Aboriginal Hounds from Russia or Kalagh Tazis, which are of the desert type. Any help appreciated!!!
Answer:I don't know your breed to answer you specifically, but I will write that importing a dog wasn't a problem for me. I simply flew over the other country and brought two pups back. If you are interested in showing, you will have to import dogs who are registered with their national breed club. Then, it's simply a matter of flying over and bringing back some dogs. Registering them is easy when your kennel club recognizes the foreign registry. For example, I live in America and show under AKC. I imported two dogs from Poland. AKC recognizes all registries which show under FCI, which includes Poland. The other option would be to petition to open the stud books so that new bloodlines can be added. This would allow non-registered members of your breed to be brought in. This is far more complicated to do than to write about so try looking into bringing in registered Afghans. I'm sure Afghanistan has a show dog registry. If not, I appologize for my ingnorance.
I lost my best friend and companion a few years' ago, he was a rat terrier/poodle, I have always admired afghan hounds, but, they're too big for my lifestyle, ever hear, see, know of miniature ones? If so, where to get. ( permenantly small would do)
Answer:a pedigree afghan hound only comes in one size. a small one would probably not be healthy or not an of aghan hound. pappillon's have silky hair like the afghan but are small, there are many small breeds. whippets are small and sleek. why not check the local pound for mixed breeds too. after all that's what your best friend was. good luck.
Because i really love Afghan hounds and whilst i cannot have one now i was thinking some time in the future when i have a big enough place of my own (or with a friend) i could have one of my own.
Answer:They are beautiful dogs thats for sure and if I didnt have 5 dogs already, including a borzoi I would be looking for a rescue. All breeds have a breed rescue and the best bet is to get in touch with many of the breed clubs. One for future reference http://www.wahc.co.uk/rescue.html Whilst you cannot have a afghan yet or any dog I suppose have you thought about volunteering for rescue - walking, playing, socialising the dogs? They are always desperate for people.
just wondering how they interact and if it's a feasable idea or not.
Answer:Sure it is. The cat will be the boss though. Afghans are usually not aggressive , in fact quite the opposite. The dog probably will get a snout full of claws once or twice, but then he/ she will learn. Good luck
Can you tell me what kind of pets they make-I'm thinking of getting one for my granddaughter.
Answer:That is alot of dog for a kid. IMO alot of dog for many adults. There is nothing more beautiful than an Afghan Hound in full coat. The are generally pretty good tempered as well. They are also not highly trainable, as they are VERY smart and were not bred to please us but to hunt independantly. Their intelligence can make them extremely naughty. They are independent and should not be expected to lavish their owner with affection. Sighthounds can never, ever be allowed off lead. I have had them for many years, and am an obedience instructor, but still would never trust mine offlead. That gorgeous coat is very high maintenance. An Afghan in full coat will need a bath/blowdry/comb out once a week or so to keep it from matting. They will also bring in piles of leaves, sticks, and pebbles in their coat. You can clip the dog down, but that will require some maintenance as well. They will happily 'remove' any critters from your yard and you may have to cleanup 'leftovers'. But they are very beautiful, gentle dogs. But more dog than many people can handle.
