i am interested in either a standard poodle or an airedale terrier, i love them both, though i gather the poodle is prone to health issues, i was wondering if the same applies to all thorough breads, and if the airedale is prone to ill health, i dont know too much about either breed, however i have made a lot of enquiries re;the standard poodle, and now i would like more information on the airedale terrier, any tips / advice would be greatly appreciated. thankyou
Answer:Standard Poodle- Life Expectancy- 12-15years or more. Health Problems- A long lived breed, Poodles are, nevertheless, subject to many genetic diseases. Cataracts and Progressive Retinal Atrophy may cause blindness, allergies, and skin conditions are common. Possibly due to the unskilled use of clippers or allergies to shampoo and/or color reinforcer. Hip dysplasia, runny eyes, and ear infections are also common. They are prone to Van Hildebrand's Disease. Brown poodles tend to become prematurely gray. Prone to bloat, so it is wise to feed your standard 2-3 small meals a day, rather than one large one. Airedale Terrier- Life Expectancy- 10-12 years Health Problems- A very hardy breed, although some may suffer from eye problems, hip dysplasia and skin infections. If your Airedale Terrier has dry skin, he should be fed an adjusted omega 6/omega3 fatty acid ratio in the diet.
We just adopted the poodle yesterday from Petsmart until now my Airedale/Irish terrier mix has been the only dog. He kind of shuns away from him its almost like hes shy or something. i know it'll take some time but i want to help it.
Answer:It's best not to interfere with the process. Most dog fights occur when owners try to "make" their dogs like each other. For now, feed them separately and make sure each has their own area and own toys so neither feels threatened. Make time for each dog individually. Airedales especially have a high energy need so without exercise you may see some destructive behavior. The dogs need to sort out who is the alpha for themselves. You may see some skirmishes, especially over food or toys, but, again, they typicallly work it out themselves. I'm also including a link for some helpful hints about dealing with a new adult dog.
