i recently watched hachiko the movie of a red akita with a white mask who is extremely faithful to his owned... i have decided to buy myself one with the same colors and features. Where can i buy a liht red akita with a white facial mask (puppy).... and how rare are they?
Answer:All Akita Inu lovers were dreading this happening..."Oh I want the dog I saw in the movie!". You are looking for an Akita Inu, not an Akita. They are considered two separate breeds in most countries, except in America and Canada which is why they are so rare, they are very expensive and there are only a handful of breeders in the US, waiting lists are usually a year long. They are not easy dogs and not suitable for everyone. You need a good grasp of dog psychology, you need to be firm but gentle. It's essential that the dog respects you and decides to follow you, and a lot of this is to do with your personality too. You need to think long and hard about whether you are right for an Akita Inu and meet breeders and dogs and see how you get on. Contact - http://www.the-jaca.org/ or AKIHO LA - http://www.akihola.com/ if you are serious about owning an Akita Inu, they will be able to point you in the right direction.
I understand I have to get my Akita into some shows in order to better his chances in becoming a stud. The problem is I am also looking to get another one and it doesn't seem there are many Akita breeders near me.
Answer:Go to AKC's events calendar, put in the info for your state and other search criteria (you want conformation) and look at the shows coming up. They are working on their website at the moment so the links may not all be functional, but should be very soon. http://www.akc.org/events/index.cfm?nav_area=events Here's the search link: http://www.akc.org/events/search/ Dog show superintendants- Onofrio- go to show information--> upper right select select upcoming shows complete listing and see what's coming up. http://www.onofrio.com/ Infodog- show information etc... http://www.infodog.com/ You'll want to TRAIN your dog before you attempt to show it. Find a facility that offers conformation training.. sometimes the best places you have to do a bit of driving to get to. Show entries close a few weeks before the show. You should attend a show (or a weekend of shows) and observe, make contact with other Akita owners and working breed owners before you enter. Good luck! Edit: Once you've found some Akita breeders you may want to ask for an evaluation of your dog and his pedigree. Please LISTEN to what they say. If he's a high quality, close to standard, health checked clear Akita they will be THRILLED to have found him. If they don't feel he matches the standard do not feel they're out to get you/your dog... the goal of responsible reputable breeders is to further/improve the breed... that should be your goal also... and what you learn may better help you choose a b*tch pup.
Please tell me about it. You can also mention any other breed of dog. I am not looking for answers unrelated to this. I don't want a list or commentary on why dogs should not be used for protection. I simply want to hear any stories where your dogs have protected you or the home. Especially from Akita owners but anyone can answer. Thanks in Advance.
Answer:When we first got our Akita, for many months he just greeted everyone with a warm welcome, and i thought that he was going to break all the rules of the Akita reputation, and be an absolute useless protector. (Not that i minded, we did not get an Akita solely for the protection of family and home) But..............when he was about 6moths old we were away camping, once again normally anyone that went by he greeted warmly, (if you camp yourself you know what it is like, you talk to all your camping neighbours and meet many from around the grounds) one afternoon some drunken idiots came waltzing in to the camp site, just being mouthy dickheads, Kato at first wagged the tail and got all excited about new people to meet, but then he realised that we were not greeting these particular intruders.............well, I can honestly say that this was the first time ever that we heard Kato bark, and from a pup that we didnt even know had a voice, the deepest most attention grabbing WOOOOOOOOF came from the little boy, he then proceeded to march the intruders away from the site and away from us. I think this was the day he found his voice and his desire to protect. I will give him credit where it is due, he seems to pick up from us if visitors are welcome or not, and behave accordingly. He will let anyone he knows into the home or anyone new that is welcomed by us without reluctance, but will bring out this deep warning bark to anyone that is not so welcome or turns up when we are not at home.

She is 15 months old. I just adopted her two months ago with no prior training. I have taught her to sit, stay, and come.. though the come's success rate is only like, 50 percent. so, how to do it with an akita? I have a big open 5 acres and can i trust her to stay on the property if she gets trained? how? my blue heeler mix stays right on the property and wouldnt DARE leave. he was trained before though.
Answer:As an Akita owner I will tell you that this is a breed that I do not let off leash, except in very controlled situation- like an exceptionally well trained Obedience dog doing off leash healing in competion, and only after being compltely proofed. Akitas as a breed are known to be extremely animal aggressive. The last thing you need is to have her get away and harm another persons pet. Also, after only two months and no prior training, there is no way this dog can even begin to be reliable. An Akita is not a "farm dog" that can be trusted to just hang out and not get into trouble. I love this breed, but understand the limits of them. I live on a horse ranch, and my Akita is only out on a leash when not in his fenced yard.
