Latest Akita Frequently Asked Questions:
MY akita's a rescued dog, I have no info on her background, she got along fine with my Samoyed (who recently passed away) but she wants to kill my Spitz everytime she sees him. Has anyone any suggestions to what I can do to get her to like him? I have him in a cage and she is on her lead in the her in the same room, she's fine with this - but I dare not let him loose where she is, as it would be tragic.
Answer:Everyone altered? How old is the Akita? Is the Spitz to high strung for the akita?
I am thinking of getting an akita puppy. Whats the proper way of introducing it to my 9-month old labrador and how to make sure they will get along forever
Answer:Hopefully your Labrador is obedience trained and reliable with following commands. If not then I would train the Lab before bringing another dog into the house. One untrained dog can be a nuisance. Two untrained dogs will make your life a nightmare. The new pup will lead the older pup into mischief and your stuff will be wrecked.
When an akita gets used to you, how do they demonstrate their affection, and loyalty, to their one and only owner? thanks
Answer:They follow you from room to room, sleep at your feet, wag their tails and kiss you when you return home, sit next to you when you're sad. They are also very protective, if well rasied they will be quiet and polite to everyone they meet unless they feel that you are being threatened, in which case they will be right there to protect you. They are brilliant!
I am thinking about getting an akita. SO i needed to check the costs before buying one. forget the one abot me owning one. i wanted an akita becuase i had one in the past and know from experince that i can handel one i wanted an akita becuase i had taken care of my neighbors. I know can handel it.
Answer:It all depends, they eat the same as a normal large dog. The price will vary depending on what kind of food you use to feed them. I take mine to be groomed and clipped usually every 4 months or so, it costs around £50 each time. They can be expensive, you can try looking into a shelter in your area as many are given up. I got mine from a breeder for £800.
ok so i have a 6 month old male akita. i try to be firm with him but i don't know how to break this habit. and yes i read cesar millan books. So sometimes when i go out side he's right beside me and then he'll lay on the ground chewing on my ankles, i know he just wants my attention but it really hurts. and when i try to leave he'll walk between my legs and stay there lol so i can't leave i guess anyway ignoring him doesn't seem to work what do i do?
Answer:Be very consistent. EVERY time, be ready to shove a toy in his mouth. Say "NO" firmly, and push a toy in his mouth. When he's laying next to you without putting teeth on you, praise him and give him attention. That's what he wants. Attention. Make sure you are noticing when he's being good even if it's a few seconds of good behavior, not just when he's chewing on you. When he starts chewing...do the NO and toy thing, then ignore him till he's doing what you want. Chewing the toy. Pretty soon he'll go to the toy, and you praise him. You'll almost be able to see him thinking "oh! I'm supposed to chew the TOY."
