Hi, I have read that it is not safe (unless in a hot climate) to cut your American Eskimo Dog's hair. However, can I use a product called the Furminator? Can you suggest any products that I can use to manage the amount of shedding my dog has? Because he sheds a lot, and I'm trying to figure out a way to make him shed less. Please help me with this problem, and suggest some ways I can reduce my American Eskimo (Eskie) Dog's shedding amount. Thanks a bunch!
Answer:The FURminator works great on shepherds and dogs with similar coats. On an American Eskimo, the coat is so thick that you really need something to get down to the skin, especially if there is any matting. Use a slicker brush and comb to get down to the skin. If you keep the coat free of matting, you may be able to use the FURminator on the Am Eskimo. Love this tool, use it for work (grooming) but never personally on an American Eskimo....due to the fact that all the ones I've brushed out had to be combed due to a ton of matts.

Answer:Every Best In Breed winner goes on to Group. Every breed has a Best in Breed winner, therefore, every breed goes to group. American Eskimo Dogs are in the Non-Sporting Group, so watch for that group when you see a show on.
If it is a puppy, how long can you leave it alone? I want a family dog, but I have school to go part of the day and my parents work full-time. Is it okay to leave a puppy by itself (inside) for a period of time as long as it has a big enough space to run around/use the bathroom until I get home and can take it outside? I'm not sure if I'm getting one yet, just wanted to know all this in advance. Any help is appreciated.
Answer:You would be better off getting an older more calm dog as puppies are prone to separation anxiety and it's not fair to leave them every day as they get bored and become destructive and do need a lot of time. I got my pup in the summer so I had 10 weeks to really know and train him. Also it's good to start leaving them early. By this I mean first 5 mins alone, then 10 etc then progressing, it's not fair to abandon a pup on his first day of being alone. Crate training would work wonders, but just consider how long you'd be away, puppies are hard work, it can be done.
Am finding it difficult to detect when my American Eskimo dog is on hit, she about 19 month old, please how do I know when she is on hit?
Answer:firstly i would suggest not breeding her till she is over two years old. secondly you will know she is on heat when she starts getting a puffy vulva and discharge from her vagina. dogs on heat last for 3-4 weeks and when they are ready for mating will stand to a dog. However again i suggest waiting till she is two or older as she is still only a pup herself an still growing
I know you can't totally tell with mixed breeds, but are these dogs good with cats? The cats are older and the dog would be a puppy. Thanks.
Answer:Any dog you get from a backyard breeder will be bad with cats.(You called it an eskipoo in your post a few minutes ago) Do not buy a dog from a backyard breeder if you want it to be good with your cats......
