Their contact info along with other breeders can be found on the following page. http://www.americanfoxhoundclub.com/breeder.html There are also a lot of fox hunting clubs in that area, I'm not sure they sell puppies to the general public. • Advice for combining American Foxhound "rescue" and our Lab/Golden mix?
We just adopted a (almost) Two year old male (fixed) American Foxhound from a kind of sad situation..(crated way too much..). Our 2 year old Male Golden Lab/Golden Retr. mix was settling down nicely and is very well housebroken and is also well trained ...(though he has a hard time listening when over excited...still working on that)...Anyway, I'd like some advice about housebreaking the Foxhound...(He has peed in his crate 40 minutes after peeing outside). I'd also like recommendation or experiences on having the two males living together happily without too much craziness. Does anyone know a foxhound who is happy in a home environment with daily walks? Or does everyone think I need to find him a place with some acreage to run? He is very sweet, smart and gentle. It seems like after we get over the transition, he could take to "home life", since a two mile walk (slow pace) had him napping for hours. Anyway, let me know your opinions and advice. I know he's better off here than where he was, but I"m not convinced I can do what's best for him and don't really know where to start. Thanks.
Answer:Boy, you've got lots of questions!! I think that if you're giving this foxhound plenty of exercise, there's no reason in the world to re-home him to an acreage. Try to add some obedience (be patient) to exercise his mind as well because when a dog has to think, it tires them out as much as a long walk. As for peeing in the crate, I believe it could be because this dog was used to peeing in his crate. You said he'd been crated way too much, so it sounds like that could be his problem. So, start by making sure you've cleaned his crate with a good enzyme cleaner so he can't smell anything. When he goes out to pee, you have to treat him like a puppy you're housetraining - go out with him and give him a ton of praise the split second he pees so he can learn that's the right thing to do. Does he pee in the house or just his crate? I'd say, keep him in the room with you so you can take him out often and praise. As for peeing in his crate, try not to crate him more than you have to and take him out often. He should catch on. And I've always had several males living together, including intact males. Two neutered males that are well socialized and dog friendly, should be just fine. You've got breeds that aren't known for being dog aggressive. You're already working on your young golden mix, do some obedience with both dogs (classes or even just on your own). Sounds like they'll both make the adjustment readily.
