  • What is the difference between the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier?
The American Staffordshire Terrier looks a lot more like an American Pit Bull Terrier than the Staffordshire Bull Terrier does, but I wanna know what is the difference between these two breeds? Are they BOTH considered "pit bulls"? Please be specific and don't give me foolish answers. Thanks :)
Answer:'Pit Bull' is a blanket term used to describe a variety of breeds that are short haired and muscular. American Pit Bull Terrier is an actual breed of dog. The AM Staff is a "pit bull'. The staffie (Staffordshire Bull Terrier) is also a 'pit bull'. These 3 breeds are almost always lumped into one when it comes to BSL and are always classified together as pit bulls. The Staffy bull terrier (also known as the nanny dog ) tends to be much smaller than APBT's and Am Staffs. It is a loving little bundle of energy and known to be great with children. Amstaffs are basically show bred APBT's. The UKC will dual register APBT's as either Amstaffs or APBT's. The AKC will only register AM Staffs. To a trained eye the Amstaff is bigger and blockier but really with the UKC dual registering and such ther is not a distinct difference yet. Way too many APBT's are blended now. a true pit was always a mix of breeds but did not tend to be bigger than 50-60 pounds. It did not have a 'blue' coat. Any blue pit has been blended with a Neo or Cane Corso. Many popular lines like Gotti, Ace, Watchdog, i could go on are blended with neos and bulldogs for that short- hippo look and not pure even though they are registered as pure. Founders of Gotti have finally admitted this.

  • Is there a difference between an American Staffordshire Terrier and a Pit Bull Terrier?
My apartment complex told me 2 months ago my dog was fine to stay with me. Now two weeks after signing a lease they are going back on their word. They want documentation from a Vet stating my dog is not Pit, so I supplied a letter stating he was labrador/staffordshire terrier mix. Now they are asking my vet to state their is no Pit in his Staffordshire. I know they are from the same family, but is there a difference between the two types of terrier? My lease only states I cannot own a Pitbull Terrier and does not mention American Staffordshire Terrier, do I have any right to keep my dog?
Answer:This is a debatable topic. They are nearly the same breed. In fact, some dogs are registered in the AKC as a american staffordshire bull terrier and the UKC as an american pitbull terrier (which is a questionable practice, the dual registering of dogs under two different breeds). Here are the breed standards to compare & contrast: UKC - pit bull - http://mail.ukcdogs.com/ukcweb.nsf/80de88211ee3f2dc8525703f004ccb1e/33B2281CE2CB81CA8525704D004CFA98?OpenDocument AKC - am staf - http://www.akc.org/breeds/american_staffordshire_terrier/ To many places, a staffy is still considered a "pit bull" though. The term "pit bull" is often used to reference that type of bully breed dog, not the specific breed of "american pit bull terrier". But it's worth a shot if you can get through on a loophole!

  • is an american staffordshire terrier and a pit bull the same dog?
We like the look of the american staffordshire terrier, but have just been told that they are actually pitt bulls, is this true?
Answer:The American Staffordshire Terrier is a breed of dog. The breed is second cousins of the American Pit Bull Terrier. Early Bulldog–Terrier crosses were brought to the US with the British and Irish settlers, especially after the Civil War, where they were mainly used as fighting dogs, but also as hunting dogs and farm and guard dogs.

  • Is the American Staffordshire Terrier the same as a Pitt Bull?
Yesterday I recieved some of my books for therapy dog training. In one of them, I read through a list of dogs that were good canidates for therapy dogs. On the list I noticed the American Staffordshire Terrier on it. I know about most of the other breeds listed. But im tottaly clueless about this dog. How hard would it be to train an AST?
Answer:Yes and NO. The APBT is supposed to be the fighting counter part of both breeds while the Am Staff is the show dog or model of the 2 breeds. Yes they share common relatives on their pedigrees, but 1 was bred to fight and and 1 was bred for specific physical qualities, (large heads, body structures, color). The APBT was and is bred for " gameness ", ( the never give up attitude in fighting), while the Am Staff was bred for looks. They look the same, i don't think anyone could tell the difference if you place both side by side...you would have to know pedigrees. As far as training, in my opinion it would be easy to train as both dogs are incredibly smart and eager to please. you would have to establish that YOU are the dominant 1 not the other way around...so think carefully before purchasing ANY dog.
