  • My 3 yo American water spaniel growls at me when eating?
She also has begun to growl when I walk by and she is sleeping at the foot of my son (age 22) when he is sleeping. She has not bitten but I want to stop this before she does. Any advice?
Answer:you've lost pack leader postion, the dog is now pack leader. This is not a behavior that you should let continue. When you feed your dog, eat something first then give your dog her food, however you need to stand over the bowl and CLAIM the dogs food, she will put up a fuss and growl but don't back down, eventually she'll walk away, which means you've won, stand up to her. You should be able to take anything she owns away, she has to learn that her stuff is your stuff and you allow her to use it. Never put up with growling or any type of aggression from your dog. Be a pack leader and that means being one 24/7. On a walk does the dog walk you or do you walk the dog? A dog should be beside you at all times or slightly behind you. You command the walk, you walk thru the door first when going on the walk and first again when returning. Letting the dog go first makes them pack leader and you the follower. A dog needs Rules and boundaries and it doesn't sound like you've set any, they also need exercise, dicipline and then affection in that order, most people give affection, affection and affection and nothing else. Remember, most dogs are born into the submissive role and like it just fine. The problem starts when naturally submissive dogs try to fill what they see as a vacant pack leader role. Since Nature never intended them to take on this role, bad or unwanted behavior ensues as they act out or try to normalize their world. -- Cesar Millan My suggestion is watch The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel Friday's at 8 & 9 pm. • American Water Spaniel VS American Cocker Spaniel???!!!?
Hey, I don't really want an american water spaniel and I love american cocker spaniels, but in my other Q, an answerer with the screen name, TJ preffered I get an american water spaniel because I wanted to show and use the american cocker spaniel for flushing. I have looked up breeders, the breed, the standards and stuff for the ACS BUT He/she said the AWS is a better dual breed... HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WITH EITHER BREED? WHICH BREED DO YOU THINK I SHOULD GET? EXTRA INFO: I have an acre yard and 2 other dogs see my other question < http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlxK7dZflvZ3msxJmId5cvfsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090615152443AAWDrIE > but I don't like the look of the AWS as much as I LOVE the looke of the ACS. THANK YOU.
Answer:My mom grew up with an American Water Spaniel & I have been researching the breed myself lately, as I grew up hearing about how wonderful that dog was. From what I see, it is still possible to find a dual-purpose AWS, one with correct conformation *and* hunting instinct. I saw your other question too, and while I don't know much about the ACS, I have also always heard that they are primarily bred for show & companionship; not common as field dogs these days. However a short Google search brought up a few results- mostly seem to be articles- so you may want to keep looking. A lot of the sporting breeds (as well as some of the herding & working breeds) have what's referred to as a "split" between show dogs and field/working dogs. Show dogs may be elegant, showy and attractive but may not have the instinct or physical ability to hunt well. Whereas a field bred dog may be an excellent hunter and his physical structure matches the work he's doing....but he may be shorter, heavier or less "refined" than a show-ring dog. Finding a dog that can be *competitive* in both the show ring or field trial can be difficult if the breed has a split. Hunting ability is mostly about instinct- which comes from genetics. You either have instinct or you don't....it can't be trained. Therein lies the problem with breed splits....too many generations of breeding for show without testing "instinct" and you eventually LOSE that instinct. However, nothing's impossible....just understand what you're looking for and how to find it. It's a big world out there and I'm no Cocker expert by any means. Could be somebody is already working on a dual-purpose ACS comeback. You may want to join a Cocker-specific chat forum, or a gundog forum and ask people who are more familiar with the topic. If you want a show/field ACS, find a breeder who has dogs that have been *successful* in BOTH venues. Don't take their word for it- some breeders will say "Our puppies are great show and hunting prospects." and it's BS unless they have proof to back it up. Look for pedigrees with show championships AND field trial titles....look for offspring that has also been successful in both venues....and that would be your best shot for a dual-purpose dog of any breed. Your other question you mentioned junior showmanship.....IF you only wish to compete in Juniors, your dog's conformation isn't being judged but rather your handling skills. You could seek out a "field bred" Cocker (apparently they exist, but I wasn't able to find but one breeder website that looked remotely legit).....and compete in Juniors regardless of whether or not he was as "showy" as the show Cockers. Just a thought. Hope you find what you're looking for, personally I think a dual-purpose Cocker would be neat to find :)

  • American Water Spaniel Breeders?
Avid sportsman that truly believes this is the perfect dog. I just can't find any breeders. I'm in Indiana, but travel is no problem for a partner.
Answer:I'd check out the breeder list at http://www.americanwaterspanielclub.org/ first off. A really good way to meet breeders is at dog shows in your area. www.onoforio.com has a listing of upcoming shows, and you can check the shows your interested in to see how many AWSs came the previous year, and if its close enough to the show, you'll be able to see how many are entered for the upcoming show. It can definitely be hard to a breeder close to you when you're interested in a less common breed, but its always worth it to find a reputable breeder. Good luck!

  • Where can I find a breeder to breed with my American Water Spaniel? ( 10 Points )?
Baiscially i have firends who want me 2 breed my dog so they can buy 1, i no they should all go to a humane soceity but i need to find a breeder in the CT/ MA/ NYarea
Answer:1. Who cares what your friends want. They aren't going to replace your dog if she dies and they aren't going to help pay for the vet bills. 2. Breeding just because two idiots are too lazy to adopt and/or too cheap to go to a reputable breeder is NO reason to become an irresponsible breeder and doing something that will lead to more than 1 or two pups. Spaniels have large litters. 3. No reputable breeder would even get involved in this kind of mess. Get your dog fixed and tell them no. If they don't like it OFW
