Latest Anatolian Shepherd Dog Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Anatolian Shepherd Dog?
After 7.5 years of thinking I owned the sweetest "mutt" in the world, I find out he's the sweetest anatolian shepherd. A dead on ringer for the breed photos. Any special needs diet for "the Bruce"?
Answer:High quality kibble, Innova, Honest Kitchen, California Natural, Timberwolf.

  • Is the Anatolian shepherd and Kangal dog the same breed or two different ones?
If they are not the same what is the difference between them?
Answer:They are 2 separate breeds, the Kangal has longer hair and a curlier tail as well as being a bit stockier, whereas the Anatolian resembles a great pyrenees. They come from Turkey, but different regions, the Anatolian is more of a widespread shepherd dog, but the Kangal is from a much smaller area, more of a separate breed, like all the mastiffs. Kangals are actually no longer able to be imported directly from turkey, they are considered the national dog, so the only ones available are from generations exported prior to 1940. Some people believe they are the same breed, but there are some small physical differences such as head width, coat thickness, slight body shape, but from a distance and to the uneducated eye, they look pretty well the same.

  • Which one is better dog german shepherd, rottweiler, anatolian shepherd?

Answer:I like the personality of a anatolian shepherd dog. They are so sweet.

  • How much do you know about Anatolian Shepherd dogs?I'm getting one soon.?
And I was wondering if people really know about them or how much people know about them.I know a lot about them and they are legendary dogs.I just wanted to do this simple survey.Thank you for your time to answer my question. And if you have one or ever had one could you give me your experienced ideas?thank you.
Answer:We have Anatolians and we also foster for the NASRN... They are a wonderful breed.. I really think alot of the personality issues people see with them is due to not knowing how to rear a LGD....Our current foster boy is such a good boy..he was dumped at an over night drop box at a shelter...he is very well behaved but can be rambunctious and loves to dig... otherwise he is a loving and dependable family member..no aggression towards other animals or people... we do have a 2 yr old female that has decided her food dish is hers and it has led to a show of teeth once or twice.... we have worked through that and she does fine. dominance and roaming are major issues (edit~ oh and digging...they love to dig) with the breed...but in my opinion that has to do with you as a dog owner... ours are cuddly babies that enjoy people and other animals... they are also fantastic guardians and will defend you or their flock to the end We have had nothing but positive experiences with this breed..they are wonderful! Of course we also have experience with training dogs i would recommend rescuing one first...the rescue dogs are evaluated for any personality issues.... do your research..they certainly are not a breed for everyone...but if you have one and you raise it right..they will steal your heart if you look at my recent question you will see we happen to be fostering a very handsome boy right now..here is his petfinder page http://search.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=9941195

  • We have an Anatolian shepherd/Kangal+Great Pyrenees/Mareema mix. What causes a big dog to slobber so much?
I know all these are big dogs. But my dad has a pure bred Anatolian and 2 pure bred G.Pyrenees and a pure bred Kangal and they don't slobber.
Answer:As your first responder stated, dogs with droopy jowls do tend to slobber. I found you can get them to do less of it if you gently tap the jowls as they are growing up, when they let the jowl drop, and tell the dog to "suck it in". Mine actually figured out I wanted them to not relax the jowls so much, and I get very little drooling unless something gets them really extremely excited like really tasty food. Mine are pyrs.
