  • Should I adopt a border collie or an Australian cattle dog? ?
I am a college student and I want to adopt a dog. I'm looking at border collies who are an active dog. I'll be apartment living for 2 years and he won't have much space during the day. I run 5 miles 3 times a week. Is this enough exercise to keep a collie sane? I've heard they get neurotic in small spaces without enough exercise. I'm looking at an Australian cattle dog as well and I've got to make a decision soon. Please Help!
Answer:I lost my Australian Cattle Dog not too long ago and I have to say, he was the best dog I have ever had in my life. That would be my pick, of course. You do not have to have a huge place, you just need to make sure you exercise the dog enough. Can you split the 15 miles up between 7 days a week? It's not quite the same, I know but better for the dog. Daily walks and lots of play, i.e, chasing a ball or Frisbee will help release the pent up energy. Also, you can consider an adult instead of a puppy. I think it would be better for both of you if you got a dog 1-2yrs+. Still lots of energy to go around but hopefully out of the puppy stage. Best of luck in your search. I guess I'm odd man out here, but I owned my ACD from about 1 1/2 yrs old. Daily romps in the park, playing with the tennis ball (until he nearly dropped) and obedience training kept him quite happy. This is a reason I suggested an older dog. You don't have the time for a pup. A dog can live anywhere as long as you provide enough exercise and mental stimulation.

  • what does is a better athelete. Australian Cattle Dog or Pitbull?
I own two australian cattle dog, I believe that they pound for pound are the strongest, and fastest dog.
Answer:The two dogs have different strengths. Your cattle dogs have more agility, speed and stamina. The pit bulls have the most 'pull power' and tenacity. Your dogs would be supreme on a long days work, but a well built pit bull would out-pull them with a loaded wagon.. Their muscles are in different proportions.

  • How do I help a four year old Australian Cattle dog and kitten get along?
I brought the kitten home today and the cattle dog is trying to eat it.....really. The kitten is hissing at the dog. Now, we already have an older cat 15 year old Brittish Blue who's very mellow. She's hissed a little but isn't as aggressive as the dog. Can we make it work? HOW?
Answer:Show the dog equal attention and show the dog you care about the new kitten. Sounds like the other older cat will be fine with the new kitten. If the dog continues to be aggressive you may have to discipline him or keep them apart until the new kitten is old enough to take care of himself.

  • my australian cattle dog problem with barking?
my australian cattle dog barks nonstop. i givee her a littlee tap on the nose when she barks but that doesnt help. ive had dogs all my life, but this is the only dog that barksat everythingg. even stationary objects! is theree something ii can do besides a bark collar? o and i forgot to say that her bark is extremely loud and piercing! lol
Answer:i have an ACD also. he is just a joy, but he has this problem with the UPS truck. every time he hears it, or i see the warning signs he is going to bark, i say his name and divert his attention as quickly as possible. it helps if you make a noise or whistle in a different way. try a prong collar also. i use this for him when he is walking. it was recommended to me by my dog trainer i used previously. it mimics your dog's mom's teeth when he is misbehaving. just be EXTREMELY careful when you use it-- ACD's tend to hide their pain, and whether or not you notice if she feels it or not, she does regardless. after i began using this device, he is the perfect walker, and isn't even territorial when other dogs pass by. =) good luck. ACD's will walk all over you if you let them, and if her bad habits are not halted as soon as they are present, she can and most likely will continue to do them.

  • Has any one ever seen a Rot and Australian Cattle dog bred together?
I have one and she will be a year old on April 14. She has a rot head and the same colors black and brown and her legs are black and brown and just look like a rot, but her back is covered in cattle dog fur where it is all grey and black so she looks like she is 11 when she will only be a year. I was just wondering if any one has ever seen another one like that or something similar?
Answer:I've seen it yes, a friend of mine actually adopted one. He's more Rot than Aussie Cattle, but still, you can see the resemblance. http://www.cattledog.com/rescue/images/mouse.jpg
