  • My old Australian cattle dog keeps fighting with my pitbull? You think i should give it to the shelter?
My Australian cattle dog has been acting very weird lately, he is 13 yrs old . He keeps fighting with my baby pitbull. Its becoming like a nightmare, have to separate them and i get bitten wehn i do that. Neighbors compalining aboout the noise too. he bit one of my guests too, should i just give it a shelter? I'm confused? My pitbull is not a puppy, i call him my baby but he's 3 yrs. old boxerpit, u are a very judgemental person.
Answer:He's 13. You give him to a shelter, they're never going to be able to adopt him. When you purchased him, or acquired him, no matter how you did so, it was your responsibility to give him a forever home. He probably isn't a fan of a new puppy in the house, you may very well just need to keep them separate for a while- he doesn't have a terribly HUGE amount of time left. You may also consider a behaviorist to assist and see just how bad they are fighting. It is common for dogs to bicker their way into a pecking order, but it should never be a severe fight where someone could injured. A vet may also be a wise option, he may have something going on that is making him uncomfortable (therefor irritable, kind of like when you have a stomach ache and you get snippy) especially since he's a senior.

  • how can i teach my australian cattle dog to herd?
I want to teach my Australian Cattle Dog to herd. hes still a puppy but i want to learn so i can teach him once he gets older..any ideas?
Answer:Lindsay B has the most correct answer you will get. Edit: Please do not go with the "instinct" idea. It is a good way to kill livestock and ruin the dog. Especially with an ACD. A good idea would be to take your dog to a trainer to be evaluated. He may not even have a good drive.

  • how do you teach a 5 month old australian cattle dog?
i have a 6 month old australian cattle dog. and man she is a beast!!!! if anyone knows how to train her!! she digs holes and she is so naughty -.- so help in giving me tips
Answer:i love the herding breeds! i grew up w/ aussie cattle dog and now have 2 aussie sheperds and a border collie of my own. they can be tricky only b/c they are so intellegent. the activity level will NOT subside, mind you. they are forever going-rough and tough and will die probably w/a ball in their mouth. that is just how the herding breeds are. she is digging b/c she is bored. put her to work! the more you work and play w/her the calmer she will be. in order to properly train and get the most out of a session is to first take her for a LONG walk. she will not only have new scenery to focus on but will tire out and be ready to focus in on you and your "commands" once you have returned. they are extremely smart! use that to your advantage but remember to not get aggitated. only "train" for about 15-20 minutes at a shot and remember to use tiny bits of food as rewards. something small enough that they really only get a taste-not have to break concentration to chew. check out these sites and do alot of research. if you really read into the breed-you shouldnt need classes. trust me! my 3 dogs caught on to such basic manorisms quicker than my 4 year old has! good luck and please let me know how it is coming along. i would be glad to help out in any way. they are truely an awesome breed-stick with it and you will surely fall in love with them all!!!!!! (the sites all have links to check out for training. i work at hillside spca-we have an awesome link for advice.)

  • Where can I find a place for my Australian Cattle Dog to practice herding in Tennessee?
I have an Australian Cattle Dog that is about 2 years old here in the Middle Tennessee area. I have been told that there are places where you can take your dogs to be able to chase around and herd livestock for recreation and exercise. But I cannot seem to come up with much from the web. I sure would appreciate any information on locations of places where my dog can run himself ragged lol.Lil
Answer:If she is AKC registered you can check out their website or ask them. They have links to shows and trials of where the locations are, but I'm not sure about herding. the web address is www.akc.org
