Latest Australian Shepherd Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How big do you think a australian shepherd mix with lab would get?
I wanna adopt this dog its a female and she is a mix of australian shepherd with lab how big do you think she will get like height and weight???
Answer:She'll probably grow to about the size of a lab, but the question should be will you be able to give her enough exercise? Every day? There are too many people out there in the world who buy working bred dogs and then keep them in the back yard and never take them for walks or jogs, as these are active dogs and will require a lot of daily exercise. If they don't get enough exercise they will dig up your garden, chew your shoes, jump up on you and other people, they'll do anything to break the boredom and to release the energy building inside them. Please don't get this type of dog if you do not have time to give her the exercise that she needs.

  • How do I get my Australian Shepherd puppy to play fetch?
My Australian Shepherd pup is 10 weeks old, and I can't seem to get him to play fetch with me. I'll throw a tennis ball, and then say "Go get it! Go get it!' and he'll usually go over to the ball, then pick it up, then he'll take one step toward me, drop the ball and run back to me. How do I teach him that he has to bring the ball ALL the way back to me? Is he just too young to play fetch or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.
Answer:Yay! An Aussie! I have 2 at home! The older one plays and runs faster than the younger one. Try making the ball smell like bacon or something. Rub the bacon on the tennis ball, let the dog smell it, make sure he licks it or sniffs it. Then throw it and see if he goes after the ball. (My dogs' names are Shadie and Hiro. Shadie is the older one and she is small. Hiro is the younger one and is very big. Shadie's black and Hiro's brown. Shadie can sniff out her tennis ball.)

  • Work full time and owning an Australian Shepherd?
I am planning to get an Australian Shepherd for my birthday in a few months. But, I work full time. Is this okay? I would spend mornings, nights, and weekends with her. But, is that enough? I have a huge yard and she would be outside(weather permitting) during the day. What do you think? Is this a good idea? I'm also about to start taking classes, but then I would not be working full-time anymore. I need advice! Please and thank you!
Answer:I don't know if that would be a good idea. AS's need constant stimulation. They were bred to be working dogs, with a purpose in life. They get bored and frustrated spending time alone, and that could come out in destructive and unhealthy behaviour. Get ready for a lot of barking, digging and destruction, not to mention depression and anxiety if you leave your dog alone like that.

  • Is 8K, or 5 miles, too much for a 2 year old healthy Australian Shepherd to run?
I am running in a church fundraiser 8K (5 miles) run on Sunday and I want to run with my energetic, healthy-in-all-ways Australian Shepherd who is nearly two years old. It will be no problem for me, but I am worried if this is too much for him, or any dog in general really. Thanks!!
Answer:That shouldn't be a problem for an active breed like this. You need to take a water bottle to keep him hydrated and also be aware of the temperature. He shouldn't run it in the heat. The other thing is - what kind of surface would he be running on? You need to think about his feet, too. That's a long distance if it's on pavement.
