Latest Basenji Frequently Asked Questions:
So I really want a Basenji, but I cant find any puppies! Can you help? I live in the Los Angeles area.
Answer:
I'm on my second. He's a 3 year old bridle. My first was a rescue, red and white female. She died at 9 years old of kidney failure. Just curious who else is out there.
Answer:Well, there's at least two of us now :)..... I have a tricolor male who will be 7 on Dec 10th :).....and a "trindle" (tricolor patterning with brindle instead of tan points) female who is about 2 yrs old. My male is my first- he came from a show breeder in Indiana. My female is a BRAT rescue, who came from a puppymill that was shut down in MO. We *just* adopted her 3 weeks ago. She was in foster care for 6 months and it took her a very long time to adjust and learn that people could be trusted. But they made some awesome strides with her. She is blossoming more and more every day- and has quite a wonderful personality!! I don't have a sex preference, I think both males and females have their tendencies and endearing qualities. My male is a male in every sense of the word....with a cocky, macho, meatball attitude! He's missing his "equipment" (neutered) but he makes up for it with attitude!! My female is a delicate little flower who does a wonderful job at giving off an air of innocence- but when your back is turned....oh boy!!! She definitely has a deviant sense of humor!! I prefer the look of the tricolor Basenji most, and admire the Brindle about as much. My female, the "trindle"....is not a "standard" color but I think it's cool- a mingling of my 2 favorite color patterns! I have been told by some longtime Basenji breeders and owners that Tricolors tend to have a more "clownish" personality, and overall there seem to be more Tris excelling in Agility and Obedience, as rare as that is for the breed alone! Never had a red/white so I can't say for sure. I have quite a few breeds I admire, but the Basenji is my absolute favorite. I may one day have the right home situation to add a larger working breed to my household....but regardless of what other breeds I may have one day, I know my life will never be without a Basenji in it, if I have anything to say about it :)
Thank-you for any help you can give.
Answer:Try www.petfinder.com. You can probably find a basenji, and though it may not be the top show dog around, I bet it'll be cute and will adore you for life.
ok.. so i have this dog that is is a basenji/boston mix. she is very jumpy an is always jumping for your hand as if you have fun in your hand. i hate that. she is always bitting my kids. what kind of training do i need?
Answer:You've got a dog with two very energetic breeds mixed in it, plus you've got Basenji influence. Basenjis are a primitive sighthound breed, and while they *are* very intelligent, they are not always easy to train. They are not very geared to "please people".....because of their heritage as hunting dogs in a semi-feral state, they can be very independent and have a tendency to "do as they please". This doesn't mean they are impossible to train, they just need more work and a different approach than some dogs. I know several folks who have advanced Obedience titles on their Basenjis, so it can be done. There is a book called "When Pigs Fly- Training Success with Impossible Dogs." It is specifically geared towards helping people approach training with a "difficult" dog breed. http://www.amazon.com/When-Pigs-Fly-Training-Impossible/dp/1929242441 If you can, I'd also highly reccomend Obedience classes. They are worth every penny. Petsmart offers a decent basic Obedience class and it is clicker-based. Basenjis do very well with clicker training as it is purely positive and it tricks them into thinking they are doing what THEY want, when in fact they are doing what YOU are asking :). You can also implement the "Nothing in Life is Free" program to help your dog learn that she must "work" to earn desired rewards- walks, meals, playtime, etc. And that YOU, not her, are the only one who gets to "initiate" interaction with the dog. This will teach her that she can't get attention with behaviors like jumping and biting. Here are a couple links, or you can Google "nilif": http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm http://www.goof.com/~pmurphy/NILIF.html http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/nilif.pdf
I just got go divorced and the ex got our blonde chow chow. I just moved to Florida and looking for a smaller dog for apartments that would be good in this climate and under 25 pounds. Are they really that violent towards other dogs. Only real exp. please. Any pics for those who have one?
Answer:The only thing I know about them apart from that they are a small dog, is that they don't bark. They can make noise but it comes out more as a yodel- not quite a howl. They generally won't even do this unless paired with another or several other very noisy dogs. They don't bark because of the way that their vocal chords are formed. (Breed All About It)
