Latest Basenji Frequently Asked Questions:

I brought my adopted basenji home and she does not want to eat!! I tried adding a little flavor by putting some doggie BBQ sauce which she liked from my hand, but still wont eat her food!! I did not change foods and she needs to gain a little weight because i can see her ribs!! Please help us!!!!
Answer:You don't say how old she is or how long she has been in your home. If this is her first week, relax. She needs time to get used to her surroundings and her new home. Continue to put her food out at the same time every day and take it up after an hour or so. She will eat when she is hungry. BTW Basenji's should be of slight build. They often look like they need to gain weight. 17 to 24 lbs is a good weight for a standard basenji. No knowing what she is mixed with, she may be of the correct weight. In the wild dogs do not eat every day. If she is drinking water she will be ok. Good luck with her and if you have any questions about her check with BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport) These people know their stuff when it comes to the Basenji and they are always happy to be of assistance to anyone with questions. Best of luck to you and your dog.
We just got a 2yo Basenji rescue and she has a dudley nose, (not black), is this normal ?
Answer:The breed standard states that ' a black nose is desirable' - if the nose has a pink tinge to it then that shouldn't penalise an otherwise good specimen - however, if the nose is completely pink then this is a serious fault. Only in the show ring though, and amongst professional breeders - it won't affect her sense of smell at all, and I bet she's no less beautiful for it!
People keep saying all sorts of stuff about Basenjis. That they're loud, destructive, disobedient, hard to train etc. so what sort of person would be good as a Basenji owner. What qualities does a person need in order to be able to live happily with a Basenji? Also if you had two Basenjis instead of one would that be better or worse than having just one? They could keep each other company during the day right, wouldn't get bored, wouldn't start screaming, right?
Answer:I think this link will answer your questions. My mom had a Basenji and it was a beautiful dog with delicate features- much prettier than the one pictured here- http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/basenji.htm Her's was very smart and totally bonded to her. It is very important to display leadership traits with a dog this smart and cunning, but it will pay off! Also, I remember, that since they do not bark, they are more prone to sneaking up and nipping, as their defense! The web page says that they do great or even better with a couple of other Basenjis- so go for it!
We recently got a basenji puppy, and we took the first week he was with us off from work to be with him, but this week we had to go back to work. My fiance leaves at 9am and comes back to the house for lunch with the pup from 1230 to 130, then I get home between 530 and 6pm. However, I am worried this is too long for him. What should we do?
Answer:Stop worrying your doing fine
