  • Bearded Collie, does any one own this breed or know any information about them?
Does anyone know about this breed?I was looking into getting one, they seem to be a rare kind of breed.Does anyone own this breed?I just want to know some info about it.I saw the breed in a dog show,I would love to get one. Thanks
Answer:Beardies, as they are affectionately known by their owners, are lovely, friendly, playful dogs. They make great family pets! However, like any dog breed, it may not be right for your particular situation. They are a medium sized dog, averaging around 50 pounds. Their long coat is a double coat, meaning it has a warm undercoat. This undercoat sheds and can get tangled if not brushed at least once a week. Puppies between 9 and 18 months of age shed out their puppy coat, and they need to be brushed at least twice a week to avoid painful matting. If the grooming is too much, a groomer can clip the coat to make it much easier for you. An acquaintance of mine has two beardies, and she clips them every summer to keep them cool as well as to reduce the grooming needs. They are intelligent and active dogs, so proper training and things to do are a MUST. This is not the right dog if you do not have time to walk it and play with it every single day. Apartment life is not ideal for a beardie, either. They do well in agility, though they can be a bit stubborn with training, so a firm (but kind) training approach is necessary. Consult a professional dog trainer if your family has little to no experience training dogs. They are herding dogs and LOVE to chase things. Because of this, they MUST be kept on a leash or in a high-fenced yard. Average lifespan is 12-15 years of age. When considering a breeder, make sure they are a member of the beardie national breed club for whichever country you are in. Also make sure both parents are tested for hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. As long as you go to a reputable breeder, your pup should be healthy and well-socialized. A rescue is great, as well, but if you have little experience with dogs, you may not be ready to handle a rescue with an unknown past. Sometimes you can find a rescue that was well-loved but given up due to situational factors. With the poor economy, the chances of finding such a rescue are higher right now than ever. See the last link for rescue information.

  • can u tell me the difference between a bearded collie, a scottish sheepdog and a low chen?
    are these breeds related?
Answer:Bearded Collie is a large hairy dog, reminds me of the cartoon figure Dennis' dog....but that was an Old English Sheepdog I believe. Scottish Sheepdog I have never heard of,check Dogbreeds at www.AKC.org. Lowchen is a medium size dog with silkier hair that can be cut into a Lion-lookalike.Again,check the American Kennel Clubs website for info on dogbreeds.Tried to help.I hope you find your breed.

  • Irish setter or a Bearded collie?
i can't quite decide which i like more. i have another dog a yellow lab but she is very good with other dogs. why are Bearded collie so much more expensive than many other dogs?
Answer:I would say the Irish Setter. They are a beautiful breed. My family used to breed them years ago. They are very loyal, great hunting dogs and make excellent family dogs, as well as being protective.

  • Does anyone else hav a Bearded collie (dog) that i can chat to?
    aparently they ar rare
Answer:I had a Bearded Collie and he was a GREAT dog! He passed away at the age of 12. He had the herding instinct and always herded my kids when they were toddlers! They used to be more rare, but are getting more popular in the US now because of seeing them in movies and commercials etc. He was gentle, and loved to play. Needs lots of excercise, and by the way, they are escape artists, so make sure you have a secure area for them. He used to open up our gate and walk with the mailman on his route! Needs lots of grooming attention. Make sure they don't get matted because it's very painful for them and they can get skin sores.
