Answer:Only in the United States is there any question that the Tervuren and the Groenendael are the same dog. Everywhere else in the world they are one breed, the Belgian Shepherd with FOUR varieties. The Groenendael is what the US calls a Belgian Sheepdog, a long coated black dog. The Tervuren is a long coated gray, red, mahogany or fawn dog with a black mask and overlay. The Malinois is the short coated variety of theTervuren. Then there is the Lakenois, a wire coated fawn variety of the breed. As for personality, they are all the same breed and all as much alike as any breed. Something you have to realize that any breed of dog has a wide variety of temperament, despite what any "standard" says. I have met Belgians that would give a border collie a run for their money energy wise and then there are those like my Dove (Toshalies Lonesome Dove, who was a Groenendael and my best friend for over 10 years until she passed away Feb 28). In the house she was a couch potato, when we were outside playing she had energy to run circles around me for days :). Belgians do much better with something to do. Teach your Belgian tricks, agility, fly ball, carting... anything you find that you and he can enjoy together. It will give you more quality time together too :) As for a name... that is very personal. You might choose a name now and find once you have your dog that it doesn't seem right for him. Or perhaps that he starts to fit it perfectly. I like to choose a name ahead too, but am always ready to change it if it doesn't suit. I hope to get a male tervuren some time in the future. I hope to be able to have his registered name be "Indigo Dreams" (behind whatever the kennel name is) and to have his call name as "Indy". Answer:German Shepherd, Border Collie and Retriever. You really can't tell. Yes, your dog resembles a Belgian, but it's doubtful there is belgian in there. They are not common.
