I am buying a bernese mountain dog, but the store says the dog is 3 months but it looks too big for that age. I haven't seen one poppy from that race before and I am not sure if it is alcuatlly true. I know the race is big. The dog is about 20 inchs.
Answer:The breed can get quite big and grow quickly. He may be a tad bit older then 3 months (like 3.5 or 4). Its kinda like kids.....they go thru lanky growth spurts, spend time filling in then go thru another "spurt" lol. Personally I am not a big fan at all of getting a puppy from a store. You really don't know what your getting many times. Either way, this pup will be a big dog whether he's 3 months or 6. They should have papers for him stating his date of birth.
What are dog breeds that have similar coloring to a Bernese Mountain Dog, but are smaller and have less fur?
Answer:Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, Appenzell Mountain Dog, and Entlebucher Mountain Dog. They are all related to the Bernese Mountain Dog, but have shorter fur. "Entlebuch Mountain Dog Also known as Entlebucher or Entlebuch Mountain Dog, this breed is the smallest and rarest of the four Sennenhund breeds. It originated in Entlebuch a valley in the district of the Cantons Lucerne and Berne, Switserland." http://dogbreeds.bulldoginformation.com/swiss-mountain-dogs.html
My 7 year old Bernese mountain dog is pooping in the house suddenly. He seems genuinely surprised when it starts and runs to get out of the house. My VET says it is a neural problem and is giving him a mild steroid. I just want to know what I can change to help him. I thought about feeding him his last meal at night a bit later - because his urgency to defecate is worst in the morning. By the way the stool is completely healthy and normal
Answer:Aw, poor guy!! My best advice would be to feed him, wait an hour (you know the whole bloat/gastric torsion and BMD relationship, eh), and then take him for a walk. Even if you have a big backyard, we have found that dogs with this "issue" do AWESOME if you walk them after a meal until they have a chance to defecate. Trust me, it works. Walking gets everything "moving" in the body. You should even be able to get him off those steroids!! Good luck! ADD: A poster suggested one meal a day.. I strongly diagree. BMD's are very prone to bloat, they need atleast two meals a day. ADD2: You can even start to write down what time each morning when he defecates. If you can pin-point it around a certain time then do your best to get up a few minutes prior and take him out or for a walk.
I am 21 years old and live in an apartment (pets are allowed). I work full time and also go to school two nights a week but only for a couple of hours. I would like to get a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy but don't know if it is possible with my lifestyle. I love dogs and grew up with many with my family, and was always good with them. Any help is appreciated.

My family and I live in a small town in New Hampshire in a house with about a 1 acre land surrounded by woods. Our family has two children, one is 12 , the other 14. We want a dog that will be friendly with the family, playful, and will enjoy walks. Do we have enough space, and is the Bernese Mountain Dog ideal for our family?
Answer:You have way more than enough space, you can live in a 1 bedroom apartment and have one. The question is dedication. Do you want the children to care for the dog? If so this is a bad idea, children will rarely upkeep a dog, so be sure there is an adult available to step in! Are you getting a puppy? if so make sure there will be someone there st first for potty training. Make sure you have funds available for vet visits, supplies, and a fund for emergencies (or pet insurance). Make sure you get all vaccines, and make SURE you get a crate. Are you going to make sure you get a high quality food? It is VERY dangerous for dogs this size to be on poor food. Stay away from: Ol Roy Iam Pedigree Purina SCIENCE DIET Alpo Or anything else at walmart or the grocery store, and please buy: Innova Wellness Canidae Solid Gold Eagle Pack Blue Buffalo or another high quality food. You will avoid so many HUGE vet bills!! :-) Make sure you have the dedication to train and exercise a dog of this size, boredom can lead to destruction. Lastly, PLEASE buy from a reputable breeder! With large dogs, health testing is so important, and it will keep you from having to put your dog down in a year.
