Latest Bernese Mountain Dog Frequently Asked Questions:
I have a newly turned 1 year old bernese mountain dog (Bear), who does not like anyone besides us in the house, or on the property, unless it is a child or another dog. If i bring him to anywhere else he has no problems its just @ my house. i also have a problem that when someone does come over and i try to put him in seclusion he has bitten me when i go for his collar. Need help for my tenderony.. . lol
Answer:While your dog is known for it's protective qualities, and it is a good thing he is being protective of your property, there is a limit to the protectiveness you should allow. There is absolutely no reason for the dog to EVER put his teeth on you and such sin is punishable by a severe butt kicking. He needs immediate training in OB by YOU so that he understands who is in charge in that household. Bill Koehler has a great book on that subject, I suggest you use it or perhaps someone here who is much more familiar with that system of training can be of further assistance. Good luck.
I was thinking , when I get older , I really want a bernese mountain dog. Can some one tell me more about them , you know , like their behavior , their health..don't give me a web page to somewhere else , i want to here it from yourself.
Answer:They are great dogs, very mellow and eager to please. They are family dogs and get along well with children and other pets (mine are actually afraid of my cat). They are slow to warm up to strangers, especially if they come in the house...they prefer to sit in another room and watch the person but they will approach when they feel comfortable. They shed quite a bit but most are twice a year (summer and winter) and the hair comes up in big clumps. They don't drool like most of the other large working breeds (some drool a little but nothing like Saints or Newfies, etc). They do need exercise but I know of people that live in apartments with them and they just take longer walks. Mine are perfectly happy lounging around the house getting in my way. They are not usually a loud breed (not a lot of barking, though mine are oddities because the original one learned to bark from a very barky Sheltie and the other then learned from her). You can email me if you have any specific questions.
When we move out of the apartment and have a decent backyard, we want to get two big dogs :) We both love Huskies and Bernese Mountain dogs, but can't decide... and want two! I think it's always better when a dog has a buddy to play with, especially when we're not home. Would these two dogs get along okay? We're thinking of getting them both at a young puppy age, at the same time.
Answer:I have Bernese Mtn Dogs and Samoyeds. They are completely different in personality. Yes, they get along well but as breeds have very different play styles. The Bernese like to throw their weight around.. body checking ~ Sams tend to like to wrestle, box and grab legs and ruffs. It takes 3 Bernese to tire out one Samoyed. Personally, I probably wouldn't leave a Husky (or a Sam) loose in the house or unattended in the yard. Their idea of fun extends beyond what I find acceptable. It is crucial that you buy from responsible breeders. Temperament is critical when you are planning a multi-dog household.... and, of course, health is imperative. Saving $$ by buying from a backyard breeder can be very expensive in terms of extra training $ and vet bills.
This is just random, not any real purpose. I just want to hear your opinions. I really can't decide, but if I had to, Bernese Mountain Dog. Have fun ha ha! Show breeders sell breed pups please don't tell me that since I love mutts but I also love pure breds. By the way, you're wrong!
Answer:Bernese Mountain dog . I just love big cuddly dogs . However my neighbour breeds trains and races greyhounds . I have a sweet spot in my heart for one of his Greyhounds , Desastrado ( Portugese for Clumsy ) . I always ofter to take him for a walk if I have time after I have walked my own dogs . He is almost clumsy , the reason for his name , Where most greyhounds are full of grace .
Im almost positive im getting a bernese mountian dog for my next dog i know almost everything about them. My mom wants to crate it but i said i dont want to. I want to know if crating the dog is the best way to go even though i dont want to. I dont know if berners do well in crates or not.
Answer:I have 3 Berners, all of which have been crated as pups. My youngest at 16 months is now 140 pounds, and is still crated. He sleeps in the crate at night, goes into it with no problem, and sees it as his "home". On weekends during the day when we are outside with them and he gets tired, he walks to his crate, goes in, lays down and goes to sleep with the door open. My friends also have a Berner, did not crate him, and he has eaten a nice chunk of the walls, shoes, carpets, etc. Definitely crate, or invest in Home Depot.
