Latest Black Russian Terrier Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Does anyone know any Russian Black Terrier breeders in the U.K.?
I have visited a couple of sites on the internet but they come across as specialising in breeding top spec show dogs. All we require is another addition to our family, so temprament and personality are far more important than physical perfection! I would be extremely grateful for any information whatsoever! We already own a much loved 3yr old border collie cross who chose us when we visited our local rescue centre and we couldn't imagine life without him.
Answer:I'd have recommended Champdogs http://www.champdogs.co.uk/guided/all_russian-black-terrier.html or for you to look on the Kennel Club Puppy Register: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/436 But I notice you're a bit wary about buying a 'show dog' ... however, I'm sure that the breeders of the 'show dogs' will also breed for temperment & personality as well ... you can't show an irritable or unhappy dog - well, I suppose you can but it won't do as well as one that's happy in what it's doing - so please don't be put off if one of the breeders whose website you visit also happens to be doing well in the showring. If you're really concerned - why not try looking for a breeder who only has a few dogs & that way it's much more likely that they've had plenty of time to love & socialise their puppies properly? Anyway, you could also try searching on ePupz - any advertised there may or may not be KC registered or pure-bred: http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?area=all&st=1&breed=Russian+Black+Terriers Oh - there aren't any puppies advertised at the moment - but I think that ePupz gives you the option to receive an email when any adverts are placed - you'll have to register for details - free & gives you all details except for current adverts - current ads cost £4.99 but it's all explained on the site ... & they do have a list of Russian Black breeders: http://www.epupz.co.uk/search/puppies_for_sale.asp?breed=Russian+Black+Terriers&area=all&st=5&Submit=Search+++

  • Do Black Russian Terriers have doggy odor?

Answer:Mine don't! They do however get smelly gas from time to time. lol

  • Can Black Russian Terriers walk a fair amount of distance?
I came across the breed and their history and description sounds like my perfect dog really but I want some info from people who have been around this breed. Can they be left alone for a few hours a day as long as they get a good few hour walks when I get home I know that they avoid dog fights and dogs in general which is another great thing about this breed since I dont want a dominant dog that tried to kill every dog in site but would other dogs be to intimidated to start anything with a dog the size and protective instinct of the Russian Terrier, I just dont want no dogs to try something with my pet even though mine would be leashed when on walks at all times Also what do you think of this breed in general
Answer:I have no personal experience with them, but it's a breed whose looks and bearing impress me! Magnificent-looking, aren't they? It says right in the AKC Breed Description that they ARE capable of endurance and have great strength. It specifically states that, so your question about long walks ... YES! Not sure about being left alone, but really most any dog gets used to it if he's trained. Most of the more "serious" breeds (The Black Russian is certainly a "serious" breed!) are fine with being home alone ... much more so than the more social , anxious, and more "barky" breeds. So I think you'd do fine on that point. Only advice I could give is to be committed to training your dog thoroughly and to please only buy your dog (or puppy) from a very experienced and reputable breeder. A large and powerful breed MUST be from good breeding stock (hopefully you'll find a breeder who emphasizes breeding for correct temperament as well as proper conformation) to ensure that you get a "good one." Best of Luck!

  • I read that 75% of black russian terriers are dysplastic, is this true?
