  • What's a good name for a female Black & Tan Coonhound puppy?
I just got a new puppy for my birthday from my boyfriend and we can't think of a good name for her.

  • Can a redbone coonhound be born with black and tan coloring?
Three years ago, my family bought two redbone puppies. One is registered with the UKC, and the other we got at discount price due to a supposedly genetic mutation that caused him to have the exact same coloring as a black and tan coonhound. In researching this, I haven't found any information about this happening. Can this really happen, or did the breeder lie?
Answer:Hello, I am a long time breeder of Redbone Coonhounds. (generations) The answer to your question is a big, fat YES! Redbones CAN give birth to black and tan puppies. Yes, purebred redbones. There is a saying amongst old time redbone breeders that "If a redbone breeder has been around long enough, they WILL have had a black and tan puppy born to them at one point or another." I tease them because, so far, I have not. I've gotten some pretty dark ones but none that are black/tan. The reason you do not see them is simple... because of the fear of their reputation being trashed because people will think they are not purebred... they euthanize the puppies at birth. Yes, they kill them due to their faulty coloring. SAD! I'm actually hoping to get one someday. With DNA tested parents and having the puppy DNA tested, I'd like to show it. They are no less purebred than any other redbone. They are just being thrown back to the original breeding. Redbones were not always red in color. They weren't even always red in color AFTER being named Redbones. Their name is from Indian legend, not fur color. I hope this answers your question. Thank your breeder for having more ethics than to kill their pups based on color. Please don't allow their reputation to be trashed because of it. This is what breeds fear in breeders that causes them to euthanize those pups to begin with. PS.. to the other responder... what breeder in MI? Is it us? :) Timing is right. We have litters due in July. Feel free to email me through our website if you like.

    Answer:

  • Can a black and tan coonhound live in the city were he will still hunt but have some complaining neighbors?
I am getting a lack and Tan coonhound. But i live in the city i am in the country almost everyday working for a long time on weekends to he will be excersized and will be taught to hunt.Yet there are many neighbors and my parents are objecting a little because the neighbors might complain if they here the dog bark im only 12.
Answer:just weekend exercise is not enough for a Coonhound. You need a large yard to have one, and without enough exercise your dog is going to become a destructive annoyance. Maybe look into another breed as you live in the city, and say you work long hours (where I assume you leave the dog home)?

  • Black & Tan coonhound? Any opinions?
Okay so this is a link to a picture of my pup. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f197/cheerissachick/IMG_1380.jpg She is now 9 months but was about 7 months in the picture. We got her from someone who was going to kill her and her siblings so we didn't see her parents etc. We know that she is a black and tan coon hound, but not sure if she's mixed. I realize her ears aren't as long as others and her tan coloring isn't pure. If anyone out there knows anything about black and tans, I would love to hear your opinion about if she is purebred, and if not, what she might be mixed with... Thanks!
Answer:She looks to be purebred and I have seen Black and Tans with shorter ears (depends on the line). I also have seen a Black and Tan puppy with mottled legs in a litter with regular markings - the only difference would be that mottling would not be acceptable for show - it can happen but is a disqualification. She could be a mix - I'd guess if anything Dobie or Greyhound but she looks pretty houndy to me - her leg coloring is just off. My first Bluetick had the shorter ears and she was purebred with papers - her sire had won Grand Nite Champion several times (hunting) - I dont hunt and she was the least likely to - so the breeder sold her to me. Here are some pics below: Dixie (1999-2008) first bluetick - http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp61/bluetickgirl13/IMG_0005.jpg Dale (4 yrs old - adopted 2 yrs ago from shelter) http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp61/bluetickgirl13/10020815031.jpg Reba (3 yr old - just adopted 4 months ago) http://i398.photobucket.com/albums/pp61/bluetickgirl13/1002081448a1.jpg
