  • How to get my Boxer to lose weight?
I have a Female Boxer who is spayed and 8 yrs old,she is overweight and I can't seem to get the ratio of feed correct. She didn't like the food the Vet recommended and now the Vet has given up her practice to go back to school and I have to find another Vet,but want to get the dog's weight down. Any suggestions? She only goes into a 1/3 acre fenced(wooden) in backyard,I can't take her for walks due to the Pitt Bulls and stray dogs that are running around the neighborhood and nobody will do anything about making them pen them up or remove them from our area. We live in a very small town and the Police won't do anything with the dogs, everybody has complained and the problem is still here. Thanks for all answers that are helpful and the ones who are being ugly I will ignore you or report you for your postings. My boxer weighs about 60 lbs and should weigh about 42 lbs. I feed her a cup of dry food with a about a TBL of wet food twice a day,is this still too much> sorry I forgot to put that part in and she is a smaller size Boxer not really tall
Answer:The main thing that you need to do to help your dog lose weight is usually to feed less food. Most owners feed their pets way to much food, and usually pet food companies tell owners on the back of bags what to feed, usually their recommendations are incorrect. You didn't say how much your boxer weighed or how much you were feeding her but a 70 pound dog should get no more then 3 to 4 cups of food a day. You also need to feed her for the weight you want her to be not the weight that she is. Also if she eats alot of treats that will lead to obesity. One milk bone is like eating one candy bar......many owners give their dogs 3 or 4 bones a day which is much to much. Carrots and plain rice cakes are a good and low fat/calorie treats to feed dogs and usually they love them. Exercise is also very important, though I can see why that would be hard for your. *also if you cut back her food and she still seems hungry add frozen or (low sodium) canned green beans to her food. Most dogs LOVE them and they are great low calorie fillers!! Good Luck

  • How do you get a boxer puppy to stop biting?
We just got a boxer puppy, he is 12 weeks old, he bites and jumps all the time we can't even go outside without getting bitten or all scratched up! Please Help!
Answer:1) I have also done some research on this subject and the biggest problem that most new puppy owners have is the "NO" command. This command does more damage then good. Here’s why..... Puppies respond better to positive reinforcement. This means that they will want to be better if instead of saying "NO" say "good boy" or "good dog" this will make the puppy think that he would want to be a good. You can give them a pat on the head or you could give them a treat. But what puppy owners don't understand is that if you just yell/snap (not saying that u are) then you are contributing to the problem. it's ok to teach them the "NO" command but it's better to do that in time when your puppy trust you and you feel more comfortable with your puppy. 2) Ok now another thing you can do is not to encourage this behavior. This means no aggressive playing with your bear hands. Like finger tug-a-war. (I know it's tempting but don't do it) this will only tell your puppy that it's alright to bite and that's play. In the long run this behavior can be very dangerous as an adult dog. It could seriously hurt a small child or another dog. 3) When your puppy bites make a loud and high pitch screech or a yell (this will shock and confuse your puppy and would more then likely stun your puppy enough to have them let go and then quickly substitute your hand with an appropriate toy). Remembering not to do it too loud so that it hurts your puppy’s ears. A chew toy or a cold frozen baby teeter would work nicely (your puppy should be teething or about to teeth this will help your puppy with his gums). Then say "good boy" I hope this helps you.

  • What to expect from a boxer that has never been around other dogs or children?
I am getting a 1 yr old boxer from a firend who's uncle passed away. The uncle had no other dogs and no kids. I have a Boston Terrier and 3 small children. Do I need to be worried that the new dog will be agressive towards his new surroundings ?
Answer:Introduce the dog to his/her new surroundings slowly. Watch for aggressiveness and fear. Try to be calm, but stern about what kind of behavior is allowed in your home from the dog.

  • How do you housetrain a boxer?
I have a 5 month old boxer puppy, and I cannot get her to listen to me when it comes to house training her. Any suggestions? She likes to bite people (playfully), and jumps on everyone. She also uses the restroom all over the house.
Answer:Boxer are very smart but tend to only listen to one person in a household, That is who needs to train it. I got my boxer a month ago and he's 6 months old and I had him fully potty trained within two weeks. He had no human interaction prior to us buying him. But heres what I did: 1) smear his poo into the ground or lightly bury it in the spot you want them to use outside. 2) take them to that spot, everytime you go out 3) reward them with treats for going outside 4) if they potty inside take the poo out to that spot and lay it there have them smell it and give them praise for it being outside, {scold them when you find it inside} Then of course pick up the poo and throw it away. 5) have some type of signal that lets the dog know that you are ready to take them out, I have bells on the door knob that leads outside and I would pick up his front paw and make him riung them as we were walking out the door, now when he needs to go out and I'm not in the room he'll ring the bells. Make sure to praise them for everything they do positive they love the positive reaction. As for the biting when it's not wanted gently take their face in your hands and with one finger tap them on the nose and say NO. usually this enough for mine to stop. They love to please. Good luck!

  • How can I get my Boxer to swim and play in the water?
My Boxer is just over a year old. He is extremely energetic, loves to run and chase, jump around, etc. We're starting to get hot weather in New England so he becomes extremely warm after running around for only about 15 mins. He always has water available but I'd like to get him to jump into the lake every now and then just to lower his body temp. I have tried to walk him in there or throw a ball, but he gets to the edge of the water and refuses to go any further. Anyone who has had similar problems have any ideas on how to get him to go in?
Answer:my boxer loves water too much. when we used to take her to the lake at the dog park (before i saw how many dogs were getting giardia) she would chase other dogs and balls in to the water. boxers are not meant to be swimmers and she is no exception. she would get too far out and start to go under until we had to go in and get her. so perhaps its a good thing he does not jump right in.
