Latest Boxer Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What would happen if a boxer were to kill his opponent during a match?
By this, I mean the boxer keeps attacking his opponent and ignores the referee, and beats the boxer to death. Brutal, I know. Would they be arrested?
Answer:Like Ivan Drago shoving the ref aside and continuing to pound Apollo Creed until he killed him? It likely wouldn't happen. Once the ref stops the fight, if a fighter keeps continuing to attack his opponent, the commissioner and other officials would get in the ring to stop it. And I am sure the opponent's corner would get in the ring too. Check out the youtube clip of Vinny Pazienza vs Dana Rosenblatt. Pazienza continued to punch after the fight was stopped and within seconds the he was pretty much tackled by New Jersey boxing commissioner. In another, completely different circumstance, there was a fight back in 2001 between Richard Grant and James Butler. Butler was favored coming into the fight but Grant dominated winning a decision. After the fight was over and both fighters had their gloves off, Grant approached Butler to shake hands and embrace. Butler then sucker punched him and knocked him out cold. Butler was arrested on the spot, taken from the rings in handcuffs (with the audience shouting "LOCK HIM UP") and he was charged and convicted.

  • When can a boxer start being in heat (Like the months old) and how do you tell if it is?
I have a 4 month old boxer. Is there any possibility that she is in heat? If so, how can I tell for sure?
Answer:Dogs generally have their first estrous cycle at 6-12 months of age. Some females of the large breeds, however, may not have their first estrus until they are 12-24 months of age. The complete cycle takes about 6 months, resulting in 2 estrous periods each year. Individual variation occurs, but a given female's pattern tends to be repeated regularly. The estrous cycle can be divided into 4 stages: 1. Proestrus: This stage begins with the appearance of vaginal bleeding. It normally lasts from 4 to 9 days. Male dogs become very interested in the female; however, she will not yet mate with them. 2. Estrus: This is the stage in which the female will accept the male and conception can occur. The vaginal discharge is more yellowish than bloody. Ordinarily, the stage lasts for 4 to 13 days. Your female will stand still and hold her tail to the side when you touch her back or a male dog tries to mount. 3. and 4. Metestrus and anestrus: These 2 stages are periods of ovarian activity, but with no significant outward signs. False pregnancies frequently occur during metestrus.

  • How old do boxer puppies have to be to get ears and tailed clipped?
I have an 8week old boxer. The person I bought him from did not clip his tail when he was first born. So how old will they need to be to get that fixed plus his ears clipped?
Answer:Unfortunately boxer puppies need to have their tails docked before they are 5 days old. I doubt you will be able to find a vet to dock the tail of a puppy who is 8 weeks old because it would be very painful. Also I would not recommend cropping his ears. This process can take several weeks and is also very painful for the poor little guys. There is only 1 vet in the area I live that will even crop ears, the rest refuse because it is only cosmetic. I work at a vet office and almost 100% of the boxers that I see do not have cropped ears!! Boxers look cute with floppy ears!! Also if the puppy you bought is a full stock boxer the breeder should have had its tail docked (and declaws removed if he has them) when he was days old. I would question the breeder for sure!!

  • What can a boxer do to move up a weight class?
I want to know what a boxer must do to move up a weight class and more importantly how can he keep the same speed when he does? I am curious about foods, supplements, and training drills for someone that fights professional. Thank you.
Answer:Remember that you want to be at the *top* of your weight class, not the bottom. If you have just moved up a weight class, you will be paired with boxers who are much bigger than you. If you're going to try to gain weight, you should do it in the off-season so that you can get to the top of your new weight class.

  • How long does it take for a boxer to have puppies ounce they get pregnant?
Im planning on bredding my boxer but I don't know how long its going to takes for my boxer to have puppies ounce it gets pregnant.
Answer:If you don't know how long she'll be pregnant, you may be setting yourself up for more problems than you know! A female doesn't need to be bred to satisfy her emotional needs. There is an awful lot that goes into breeding dogs right - are you sure you're ready? Boxers are usually easy whelpers, but do you know how to tell if the pups need to be delivered by an expensive emergency c-section? Do you know how to build a proper whelping box with a pig-rail, so that none of the pups can be crushed behind or under their mom? Do you know what eclampsia is? If you don't, your dog could die. Do you know how to tell when all the pups have been born? If there are any left inside her, they could die and so could she. Do you know where the nearest emergency clinic is? Dogs often deliver in the middle of the night. If there are any problems with the whelping, it may cost you $100 just to walk in the clinic's door - then all the other costs on top of that. Before you breed, you have to have your vet do a health exam and fecal tests and blood tests for intestinal worms and heartworm to be sure her health is good. Then make sure your dog and the male you select (who should be a champion - your pups will be worth more!) are tested for Brucellosis - a canine VD. If you breed her to a top quality male from an experienced breeder, they can help you with advice and may even show up to help you deliver the pups - but usually you're on your own. They can also advise you as to whether or not your female is good enough to breed and that she has no major faults that she could pass on. Expect to pay at least the sale price of one pup for your stud fee. If you just want a pup to keep for yourself, it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to buy one than to breed your own. The pups are going to need food and shots and worming and lots of care for eight weeks. If the mother rejects them, guess who is going to be up twice a night and four times a day hand feeding every pup? Have you got the time and energy? You won't make much money breeding dogs if you're doing it right! One of my breeder friends once calculated that she made less than $1.85 per hour after expenses in a litter with no problems. I bred one litter myself (from champion dogs!), but now I'd rather go and buy the pup I want. If you're still reading, go to www.akc.org and look up breeders. The best breeders will show their dogs in breed, obedience and/or field work - and they will be members of a dog club that promotes breeding health, good-tempered dogs.
