ok.. so im getting a cairn terrier sometime this week.... its my neighbors dog.... they have 2 give it away 2 somebody because he keeps digging under their fence.... which he learned from their 8 month old puppy they got a few months ago.... i dont have a fenced backyard YET.... but he will be getting at least 2 long walks a day and maybe be brought over to my neighbors house once in a while to run around.......until we get a fence put up (in the next few weeks or so) we have one but it cant be put up for a few weeks. how often and how much should i feed him? im not sure how old he is and any other info would be appreciated. thx thx... they just leave food out all day for both their dogs.. because one is like 3 times as big as the cairn. and i am thinking about just feeding him 2 times a day.... but i will just do that gradually.. and their bigger dog (shes a australian shepherd/black lab/golden retriever mix) is huge.. and eats a lot thats why they leave food out all day indydogmom-no he wasn't digging before... he did when he was younger but then grew out of it.. when they got the new dog, she dug in their sandbox and he realized that he could dig under the fence
Answer:I have a Cairn terrier - she will be three at the end of Oct. They are true terriers - you live in their world they do not live in yours, make sure you have chew toys for the dog and keep your shoes picked up at al times (I have lost two pairs!) Cairns love exercise and being outside. The Cairn most likely knew how to dig and the family just did not notice him digging. Cairn are diggers - the were bred to dig/flush out rodents in Scotland. I feed my Cairn twice a day - once in the morning (around 6-7 a.m.) and again at 6 p.m. I leave water down all day. I feed her just under a cup of food each time - there is normally some food left in her morning bowl. Good luck and I hope you get your fence up soon. Make sure you get the dogs hair brush from his current owners - you will need to brush him a few times a week.
I have a 3 year old Cairn Terrier ( male and fixed ). We are getting an 8 week old British Labrador. What do I need to do to make sure they will get along together? The Cairn Terrier sleeps inside ( in the bed with us ), but the other dog will be an outdoor dog.
Answer:Hey well i don't have a lab or terrier but i do hav a big (outside) dog that is and Australian Shepard and a little (lap dog) Chihuahua. We got Sparky first, big dog and then the little dog, Taco but they are like totally best friends now! Its so cute. Sparky sleeps out in the kitchen and is fine with Taco sleeping with us so i don't think that will be a problem. But one thing we definitely do is don't have toys around!!!!!! Because usually the bigger dog will take them but i don't know if that is just because she is older. Well i hope my situation helped you to see that it doesn't really matter the size, just the heart.
I brush my cairn terrier nearly every day, but no mattter what I do he still has that scraggly look, I keep him inside so hes not really exposed to any elements that will make his fur matted or anything. Can anyone advise and shampoos or grooming methods to stop him looking so wild?
Answer:You need to take him to a professional groomer who can "strip" his coat. You should do this more often in the summer months. Also try bathing him in a conditioning dog shampoo. Keep in mind this type of breed will always have a "scruffy" look, but with professional stripping his coat will be more managable!
