Puppy Dog Breed Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Latest Cardigan Welsh Corgi Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Should I get the Pembroke Welsh Corgi? Or the Cardigan?
I have a big yard, but when we travel to the beach, there is no where for the dog to play inside. So there isn't allot of room there. We have 2 small children ( 2 month and under 5) Have a big yard and big house, while at home. Less shedding would be great! Would the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, or the Cardigan Welsh Corgi be good with our living? Or another breed? No big dogs please! And appreciate your help!
Answer:The cardigan has slightly better temperament than the pembroke. Yes, they usually get along well with children. May try to herd them, though. Over 95% of dog bites are to children under age 5. The majority are to the child's face. When a dog bites, the consequences are severe — for both the dog and the child. Most often, it was not the dog that did anything wrong nor is the problem an aggressive dog with temperament problems. More likely, the problem is that many normal, everyday behaviors that small children exhibit are behaviors that excite the prey drive in a herding dog and may cause any dog to feel the need to defend itself. By understanding these, you can work with the child and the dog to prevent unfortunate mishaps. Little children often thrust their faces right down into a dog's face. They shriek and make loud noises. It is typical of a child's play. In dog language, these are assertive and threatening behaviors and a dog's natural response is to protect itself. It is also common for small children to chase a dog. If the dog is feeling backed into a corner as a result, it will protect itself the only way it knows, and this can mean a bite. I have witnessed this type of behavior many times with "good kids," including my own relatives.

  • How do I stop my 8month old Cardigan Welsh Corgi from wanting to bite everyone and acting vicious?
I really need some help with 8month old Snoopy as he is very special to me and i don't want to loose him. I need some training tips. PLEASE HELP!
Answer:You need to take him to an animal behavourist (not a trainer!) and take obedience classes too.

  • Anyone know of an affordible Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeder?
Anyone know of a reputable breeder that wont break my bank? Thanks!
Answer:Check out the Cardigan Welsh Corgi club for your country and see if they have breeder referrals. They can suggest some reputable breeders for you to contact. Getting a healthy dog from a great breeder, even if it isn't the cheapest purchase price, will go a long way towards having a dog be affordable in the long run (lower vet bills, etc.) Even show breeders have puppies for pet homes, and will even sell retired adults at a reduced price to the right home. Contacting one of the Cardigan rescue groups is an even better idea!

  • Which would be better for an 11 year old to have as a pet dog a pug or a cardigan welsh corgi?
She is ready for a dog. but she cannot find the right dog. she has two sisters[6 and 4 years old] she took a quiz for selecting the right dog and she got pug and cardigan welsh corgi. Which one do you think is the right dog or her??
Answer:Either breed would be okay, but both breeds have problems. The pug has a lot of genetic problems. Due to their flat face, they have difficulty breathing and their protruding eyes are very easily injured and popped out of socket. (Not a pretty sight) I can easily name 5 clients who have one-eyed pugs due to accidental injuries. They are not a breed that can be rough housed with.....they are simply conpanion dogs. Pugs can be tempermental and one person dogs. The Corgi is a hearding breed and probably a lot more sturdy, especially for a child. Over the years, I have seen some badly bred Corgis. They also have their own genetic problems. Due to the fact they are long dogs, they can suffer from spinal problems. They also tend to be tempermental and in my own personal opinion and from my own experience, the can be a bit snappy. However, they are the queen of England's favored breed of dog. In any case, make sure you find a reputable breeder with experience and who breeds dogs to the AKC standard and void of genetic problems. Do not buy from back yard breeders or pet shops and you will save yourself a lot of heartache and in the long term, money.
