Latest Chesapeake Bay Retriever Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Chesapeake bay retriever info please?
Any information about chesapeake bay retrievers? Please do not base your info on cuteness or similarity to Labradors. I know about their history (that's all they have on AKC, besides breed standard) I need to know about the average chesapeake bay retriever today, not in the past
Answer:My family had 6 Chessies. They're great dogs - for the right person. Chessies, except some females, are generally big, and well muscled. And they're powerful. This is an active breed of dog...and when I say active, I mean outdoors. If you're not an outdoorsy person - this breed is not for you. Chessies love water. They fur is wavy and oily, to repel water. Sometimes they can be a little stinky. Just search Chesapeake Bay Retrievers on Yahoo Images and you'll get countless photos that cleary show the personally and interests of this breed. If you can see yourself in these pictures, then this might the dog for you. When Chessies are young, they can be a little nutty and rambunctuous, like any puppy. But due to the size, they're kind of like a bull in a china factory, if you get my drift. Don't keep valued breakables at tail height. Chessies can be great companions, especially excellent with children. And, with some exceptions, they're really friendly, happy dogs. They don't just wag their tails, the whole body goes with it...And a huge smile, too! On the down side, along with being kind of stinky, Chessies can be runners (escape artists)...like most other hunting breeds, and sled dogs. Early and consistant training is highly recommended with this breed. Many Chessie owners use their dogs for hunting. And the dogs love it. But - many of these owners also keep their dogs in a kennel. Usually a little fenced run along a garage. Or worse, tied to a tree. I consider this to be the cruelest punishment that anyone can do to an animal. With humans, imprisonment is reserved for criminals, not for loved family members, like your pets. It's great to see that you really want to know about the breed, and best of luck to you with whatever choice you make.

  • How do I stop my 101 pound Chesapeake Bay Retriever from eating the sofa - it only has 1 arm and 3 legs left ?

Answer:Yikes! I'm so sorry for you and your sofa! Even though your dog is an adult, you can still train it to stop eating your sofa. While you are with him, if you see him chewing on the sofa, pull him away from it. (Don't hit him; you'll only scare him and then he'll just not chew it in front of you, but he'll continue doing it when you're not there.) Give him something else to chew. Praise him when he chews that toy instead. Repeat as often as necessary. If you want, you can also instill a social isolation period. When he repeatedly chews in front of you, lead him to a gated area in your house, or into a room. Close the door. Let him out after about 30 seconds. If he chews again, repeat. Dogs hate social isolation, so a calm time-out is often a good punishment. Your dog may also be chewing the couch out of anxiety. When you're out, you may want to consider a crate big enough for him. Make it a haven for him, his special place. This makes him more secure; you can also rest assured that he isn't chewing something that could gag and kill him. Along the anxiety route -- most of the time, when you are not at home, a dog is sleeping. The damage is usually done shortly after you leave or shortly before you return. When you leave and return, be very calm and ignore your dog for a few minutes, then calmly greet him. Too much saying goodbye makes him anxious when you're gone and he's alone. Too much enthusiastic greeting upon your return, and he gets anxious when you leave again, because it's so fun when you're there. Also, plenty of exercise is a must. A tired dog won't chew your dog -- he'll just sleep!

  • Why do you think the Chesapeake Bay Retriever isn't...
Why do you think that the chesapeake Bay Retriever isn't just a different color of Labrador Retriever? And if you know the real answer, feel free to give me the true reason!!
Answer:Read the breed standards. They came from very different lines of dogs from completely different countries and the breeds are totally unrelated. Their body types and coat textures are different. Their temperaments are extremely different.

  • Has anyone owned a Chesapeake Bay Retriever?
I had two, a chocolate colored and a deadgrass.... Annie and Turtle Roo-Roo and I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with the type of dog? They were the best dogs I have ever had in my life... I'm actually a cat person but these guys stole my heart!!! They now have a new owner who has taught them to hunt and has given them a home that's more "appropriate" because they'll actually get a chance to do the work they're bred for.... Oh yea... and they're crazy as heck, and they smile!!! Anyone else love them as much as I do?? (They're a very difficult breed so a lot of people won't touch them.. they're intelligent but very stubborn..).. gomegomeyay... I'm jealous... I really miss my babies... I am actually grieving for my girls, lol.... sitandstaystl... My son's dad brought the chocolate one through obedience also.. he's in Wildwood, Mo (name is Tom also).... the chocolate one was the hardest to train... I've never heard such a lovable ROOROO bark or seen such a funny little smile these dogs have.. very unique! animal_artwork... that's hilarious!! I bet she was having the DARNdest time, lol... Aren't they an awfully strong dog? When I was letting RooRoo in the house you would hear screams and doors slamming (the kids hiding).. even the 16-year-old would run for cover when the "monster" was coming in, which was all the time.. but she was really gentle with our cats... There is a phrase that applies to Chesapeakes - "You can order a lab; ask a golden; but you must negotiate with a Chesapeake."
Answer:My friend Tom has one that he brought through my obedience class. He is quite misbehaved, but that is more of a case of outsmarting his owner. I do think they are for more experienced dog parents, but anyone can learn. They are lovable. :)
