She's a great dog..Any suggestions on how to get her to adjust to this extreme heat? Should we shave her to make her more comfotable??
Answer:Congrats on getting a chessie! As the others mentioned-do not shave her-it will indeed ruin her coat. I've seen dogs get shaved, in which cases the hair never grows back the same-either really thin, in random patches, or hardly growing back at all. Their hair actually keeps them cool in the summer and keeps the sun from damaging their skin. Her most distinct feature as a chessie (other than the boldness, haha) is her wavy coat-without it's she'd just look like a boring ol' lab (don't get me wrong, i love labs, but adore chessies). Take her swimming lots-she will love it. I have never met a chessie who did not practically fiend for water. I swear mine can smell water three miles away. And, of cousre, it will aslo cool her down a bit. Make sure she gets pleanty of water. Keep her cool by puting the air on in the house, or getting a few fans. Even spray her with the hose a few times a day. She'll adjust over time, but take it easy for a while at first-don't exercise her too much, and like I said before, make sure she's got pleanty of water available for her to drink as she needs to. I think swimming is your best bet though =] Get a little kiddie pool from a toy store or walmart. They're wonderful-my dogs love it when the kiddie pool comes out.
I have a one year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who is pretty hiper, he went to the vet today to get a check up before he gets nutered next week. We found out that he has developed heart worms, we are going to do the treatments to get rid of them starting in a month. The thing I am worried about is that for the 30 days of his treatment he has to kept under a strict order that he has to be kenneled or chained up with no play, running, or getting excited for 30 days. He is so hiper at times how are we going to do that and I am going to feel so bad not letting him out to play, I am also worried about him resenting me for keeping him locked up for so long? Has anyone else had to do this and how did it turn out?
Answer:It is sad that you have to keep your dog confined for 30 days but you have to remember that if you don't it will kill him. I am sure that the Veterinarian that you are going to has explained everything to you and maybe even sent home brochures about heartworms, but one thing to keep clear during all this is to remember that this is life or death. The strain that will be put on your dog heart will be great and the 30 days will be torture for you both but you have to do it, for your dog.
Answer:Two different breeds, two different body types, two different head types and different coat lengths. Same basic function (duck hunting) but they come from separate blood lines.
