i'm planning to buy a chihuahua and i just wanted to know all the advantages and disadvantages in keeping it.....
Answer:Chihuahuas are like babies. They love to be held and cuddled. They adore their owners, but do yap at times. They are not great with young kids or strangers. These are "velcro" dogs that love to be near you every moment. They always want to be held. I have never had one with skin allergies. And I have had wwwaaaayyyy over a dozen of them. So, that is not a common issue.
I am looking to buy a Chihuahua, but first had a few questions. 1) If socialized early, can they be good with kids? 2) Are they really as loud with barking and as mean as people make them out to be? 3) How much does one cost from a GOOD breeder that already has socialized them and stuff? 4) Leaving them alone in the day? 5) Anything else I should know? Thank You! =]
Answer:I have two Chihuahuas, they both came from rescue and I would urge you to adopt first. I got Cooper from rescue when he was 6 months old and PJ from rescue when he was 7.5 months old. Both of my fixed boys are great with kids, even though no kids live in the house they are very nice to them when kids are around. Cooper barks a little but only if he sees something, PJ hardly ever barks. I think you should be very firm with a Chi and don't treat them like a baby putting them in dresses and carrying them around in a bag. That is how they get the mean complex, they aren't treated like a dog but rather a toy. if you train them correctly, treat them like any other dog they will be just as good or better than another small dog. I'm rarely not at home, but have traveled for a day or two and both of them are very well behaved and have full run of the house. They were easy to potty train and listen very well. They like to just sleep in my bed when I'm gone. I take Cooper and PJ to the dog beach and Cooper will out fetch a Golden Retriever, everyone at the beach is amazed with their fetching abilities. It just goes to show you there is more to a Chihuahua then yapping, it is all in how you treat them. I think they are awesome little dogs with a lot of personality packed into a little package. I recommend going for a normal size Chihuahua as the super tiny ill breed ones have a lot of health problems. My Cooper is 7.8 pounds and PJ is 6.6 pounds and both are very healthy and very sturdy dogs. You start getting under 5 pounds and risk of injury increases.
I have a 5 year old chihuahua who definitley fits all the chihuahua stereo types. We had another Shitzu who was 7 years old. She would try to play with my chihuahua but my chihuahua never played with her. It was almost like she was too good to play with her. We recently had to put our shihtzu to sleep. My chihuahua didn't really seem upset even though she had lived with her her entire life. No we have a new shihtzu puppy and my chihuahua plays with her nonstop. My chihuahua is also not as snippity with her. I was just curious to why? You would think she would hate a new puppy, but she seems to love her.
Answer:Maybe she is wanting to play the mommy role. With a new puppy she can train it her way but not the other dog.

I know that teacup chihuahua's are smaller and lighter than regular chihuahuas, but do they have the same temperment? And do tea cup chihuahua's have higher health risks (besides being more susceptable to fractures)? And anything else about them that would be helpful is appreciated :) I'd actually prefer to have a regular sized chihuahua than a so-called teacup chihuahua, I was just wondering what I need to knowjust in case I fell in love with a 'teacup chihuahua' and ended up getting one instead of an average sized chihuahua.
Answer:I would assume the only difference is that they are bred to be smaller than their counterpart, hence the name Tea cup. I'm sure they would have the same temperment as the larger Chihuahua however, due to the small breeding size might be prone to more health risks. Besides, whenever you start messing with the genetics of a breed there are always more health problems than with the original breed. The only healthy breed is a Mutt.
