Latest Chinese Crested Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do Chinese Crested dogs tolerate / get along with cats and rabbits?
I am considering the Chinese Crested dog breed, but I have a large cat and foster bunnies waiting for adoption. Cat and bunnies are indoor-only, and the bunnies are allowed free running time in the house. I am hoping to find an adult Chinese Crested through a rescue group, but want to be sure the breed is very likely to be tolerant of or oblivious to the bunnies. (The cat can hold his own.) Does this breed generally do well with small animals? Thanks!
Answer:The Chinese Cresteds that I have known have all been very sweet, gentle dogs. I think they would be absolutely fine with other small animals. Good luck finding a rescue though - they are a rare breed and I don't know anyone who's ever given one up.

  • Has anyone used the chinese crested skin care line called Ally Opps?
Can you tell me how it worked for you? Or tell me what do you do to clean your hairless chinese crested? She has no skin problems. But I've been told to use lotion and sun screen. But I would think that it wouldn't be needed. Please comment
Answer:Watch out for lotions that have lanolin them. Most cresteds will re-act to that product. The best lotion to use I buy at WalMart in the after sun section called Oceans Potions and it smells great! The only time I put lotion on my cresteds is if they're showing or after I shave them. The thing I find the best to do is to use Wet Wipes the antibacteria ones. I wipe them down every other day with those. They're is also a product called black head remover which is a round vibrating Scrubber that you can put new pads on. I believe it's made by clean n clear. Only use sun screen if she's light in color, or if you'll be in the sun all day. Sun screen can cause more harm than good. If she doesn't have skin issues I'd skip the lotions and only use the wet wipes! If you have anymore questions I just started a chinese crested group or my website should be up soon. We show cresteds and have won best in breed at Westminster 2009! Feel free to email me with any other questions!

  • Where can I adopt a Chinese crested dog as a pet?
I'm looking for a housepet, not a show dog, so I don't care if he or she meets the "breed standard." I'd like a dog that is friendly, though. I'm looking for a dog that is basically healthy, but I don't mind a dog that is "funny looking." (I find some of the more unusual-looking Chinese crested dogs quite charming.) Children live in my house part of the week, so the dog should be good with older, gentle kids. I've already checked my local SPCA. Are there any reputable breeders or rescue agencies I should contact? I live in upstate NY. I have owned dogs before (but have none currently).
Answer:Petfinder is a good place to look, especially for adult rescues but if you are looking for a puppy for a pet, then the show breeder who does health screening is the place to search for one, if you want a healthy pup with little to no chance of having genetic health issues, This is a a breed that can have a lot of serious genetic health problems one of the worse is Legge calve perthes, where ball of the hip bone literally rots away, usually becomes noticeable around 2 years old on xray http://www.vetinfo.com/dencyclopedia/deleggcp.html Going thru a good show breeder is not about getting a good looking dog but trying to get a healthy one, they are cheaper to buy from than the puppymill one in the pet store which is often very poorly bred. I am not sure how much research you have done, but a look of people thing because they are hairless that very little grooming in needed where in fact the need more than most other breed, like baths 3 times a week, followed by moisturizer, they also get hairy faces that to look good need to be shaved the hairly hairless also grows patches of hair on their bodies , they need suncreen to prevent burning Here is a welbsite that discusses care and grooming http://www.crestars.com/englishversion.htm

  • Do some chinese crested dogs have to be shaved a bit?
My chinese crested seems to be growing little hairs.
Answer:I don't think so, but you may want to.

  • so i am getting a chinese crested?
I am getting a chinese crested and wanted to know what shampoos, suncreams, moisterisers and hair clippers you would recommened.
Answer:I prefer to just use a mild, moisturizing dog shampoo on my Crested.. when he is having breakouts, I use something like Johnson's Foaming Facial Wash. Some people do use special shampoos for dogs who have more difficult skin.. such as a benzoil peroxide shampoo. I also use black soap on his skin on occasions, as its very moisturizing. I use a buff pad on his skin to exfoliate. On occasion I use sugar scrub.. you can make your own by mixing sugar and olive oil. For lotion, anything that doesnt clog pores is fine.. Eucerine, Olay Quench, Curel Ultra Healing, etc. Hair clippers.. depends if you are getting a true hairless or a hairy. I have a true, and just use a disposable razor on his face. Many people reccommend Braun (same kind men use on their face) or the Wahl Peanut. There is dog sunscreen, but most just use baby sunscreen. Make sure it does not contain lanolin. I have found that gentle cleansers.. and the "less is more" concept works best with my Crested. WHen he was a puppy I had all kinds of products for his skin, and he had more blackheads and acne than he does now.
