Puppy Dog Breed Clumber Spaniel

Latest Clumber Spaniel Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Cam anyone give me a list of Clumber Spaniel Breeders near(somewhat)near Michigan?

Answer:You might contact a nice fellow who breeds Clumbers in Austinburg, Ohio. He raises some nice puppies and has several champion lines. His name is Lynn Van Gilder, you can see his website at www.woodburyclumbers.com. I believe he is located quite close to Michigan. I myself have some offspring of Lady Caroline Clumber and Woodbury Lord Chadwick who happens to be sired by one of this nations finest champions, Am. Ch. Libell's Hot Shot At Clussex. I think you will find Lynn very honest, I should know!! Best Regards, Catherine @ Mobulls

  • for Clumber spaniel owners?
Are Clumber spaniels prone to submissive or excited urination like cocker spaniels are?
Answer:I'm not a Clumber spaniel owner, but I've met my fair share at field trials and do know people who own them. Clumber Spaniels can be difficult to housebreak and some will submissively urinate. Young Clumbers and female Clumbers in particular are more prone to this behavior. In the breed club website it specifically states under the "ugly" section that this breed is known for submissive urination. http://www.clumbers.org/Puppies/PuppyBuyerGuide/PuppyBuyerGuide_Intro.php

  • What is the difference between a working/Field and a show clumber spaniel?
My family would like to get a clumber spaniel as a pet. We've found a litters of both working and show types for sale. It's come done to us having to choose between the two. But because this breed is relatively rare, we haven't been able;e to find much Information on how different the show and Field types actually are. does anyone have a working clumber spaniel as a pet at home? Is there any difference in tempertemperamenten the two? Does one need more exercise then the other? Are both types of clumber spaniels the same size or is one smaller than the other? Is one type any healthier then the other? Which would make a better family pet?
Answer:They are bred a bit differently. If you buy from a reputable breeder that shows their dogs in the field or in the conformation ring that is good. Also make sure they health test, if both breeders are screening for congentital disorders you can be assured your pup SHOULD be fairly healthy. However, it does not mean you pup will not get the disorders common to that breed. You are just assured that all measures are taken into consideration prior to producing a litter. Every now and again a throwback can happen even with the best breeders. I am not overly familiar with Clumber spaniels however, I am very familiar with working lines vs conformation lines. Your spaniel that is field bred is bred to have a higher stamina. Conformation sometimes does differ a chooch and the breeder places higher emphasis on a structurally sound body type to handle the work load it was bred for A conformation breeder breeds per breed standard. Meaning the overall pic has to be near perfect as AKC has it outlined. Esp with Spaniels, empahsis will be greatly placed on expression. The Clumber needs to have the correct gait when moving and correct haircoat and body dimentions etc. For pet ownership either would suffice. Talk to your breeder and find out what they think and be willing to allow the breeder to "pick" your pup for you. If a pup doesn't meet show standards or competition standards it still makes excellent family pet prospect. Through visiting with your family the breeder will determine what pups personality would suit you the best along with physical attributes. Size wise...sorry I don't know that :o) I will tell you however, with Labs, setters and Springers I have seen that the field bred is a lot higher energy than conformation bred. They need to be to carry out their jobs. That does not mean however that the breeder breeding feild bred dogs does not have a pup out of the litter that will be a bit more laid back. From what I know of the Clumber they are a pretty mellow dog. Temperments should be the same...that is one distinguishing factor that makes the breed. esp with Spaniels.

  • What type of dog should I get....thinking about a clumber spaniel?
I have a town house with a small back garden but the house is up for sale and we are hoping to move to a bigger place soon. I have a 1 year old daughter and a husband. I work 3 days but my mum is at my house looking after my daughter so the dog wouldn't be left alone all day. I would like a laid back, easy to train dog who is good with little children. I have spent some time researching and think that the clumber spaniel seems like a good match for us. I know they can shed a lot but I don't mind spending time grooming the dog. I would like to hear from anyone who has owned one of these dogs as to what they are really like. Also any suggestions for other types of dogs would be great. This would be the first time I've had a dog so apart from watching the Dog whisperer! I've no experience of handling dogs so nothing to tricky to control,Thank you x
Answer:With kids in the house, it's generally better to select a type of dog bred to live and work closely with people, such as sporting or companion dogs. I know firsthand the joy of Golden Retrievers and retired racing Greyhounds, but Boston Terriers, Labradors, King Charles Spaniels, Dachshunds, and Poodles, just to mention a few, are great dogs as well. http://dogtime.com/clumber-spaniel.html http://dogtime.com/dog-breeds.html

  • i have a question about AKC registration i have a 5 year old pedigree clumber spaniel .can i still register?
i have a 5 year old pedigree clumber spaniel my dad got him from his friend from germany so he is registered in PZK ( polish kennel club) and FCI he was 5 times best in breed and 2 times best in show we got him a year and a half ago , and he is just a joy . also is there any fee for registration a dog in the AKC ?? we have another dog shes a 2 year old irish setter we bought her here in NY also is it good to neuter him at this age??? my parent are thinking about adopting a mastiff mix or buying an OES ( old english sheepdog) or Bearded collie after we move to our new house ,we live in an apartment right now we are moving in may of this year oh no the 2 year old is spayed already im talking about the 5 year old spaniel
Answer:There's ALWAYS a fee for registering your dog with the AKC no matter when or how you do it, that's one of the ways they make their money. I believe that the AKC recognizes the polish kennel club, so you should be able to register him with the AKC. http://www.akc.org/reg/registeradog.cfm is the link to their web page on registering. You should be able to find all the information you need to register your dog here. If you can't find something on their website, they should have contact information for someone who will be able to answer your question. If you don't plan on showing (conformation, you can still show him in obedience, rally, agility, and other performance events) or breeding this dog then yes, this is a good time to neuter him.
