Latest Curly-Coated Retriever Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How much exercise does my dog need?
He's 2 years old, sort of like a mini golden retriever. His dad was a curly coated retriever, his mum a spaniel x kelpie. I'm adopting him soon and want to know what to expect
Answer:If he's more a golden retriever, then here's a link that help you give a lot of helpful information about this breed --care, activities, grooming, among others. Good luck!

  • Curly Puppy??
hi, im getting a curly-coated retriever puppy withing the next 2 weeks, ive done all my homework, and was just wondering if anyone had any tips/pointers for me, and also potential names? the puppy is black, and male. thanks a million! im actually really at a loss 4 names, and im in desperate need of help. the only thing that im not going to name him is curly, as that states the obvious, and isnt that original for the breed
Answer:Wait until you have him. Give it a few days and his personality will inspire you. Mack didn't have a name for three weeks after I got him because all he did for a while is sleep. Then one day BAM it hit me.:D

  • My sister's dog is barking during the day while she is gone, any suggestions?
Unfortunately it has been happening for ten months now but the neighbours only just thought to tell them 3 weeks ago, and have been complaining consistently since! The dog is a Curly Coated Retriever, she has a companion dog (a male Lab x), gets one long walk daily and is allowed indoors during the evening, weekend and night time, the dogs also go camping and boating with my sis and her partner so get lots of variety. They live in a warm climate and the dogs have a comfy kennel each plus a shed if they want. They have kongs and toys during the day. I am a dog trainer and have given them lots of advice but just after any other suggestions. No punishment devices thanks, we use positive reinforcement as much as possible.
Answer:you have two choices since there is no way of reenforcing behavior if you have no idea what is happening. Bring them inside or a spray collar. Also try bachs flower remedy, there may be some seperation anxiety happening.

  • ??Why does my cat like being licked all over the head by my dog?
My 9yr old pursian encourages my poor dog (curly coat retriever) to lick her all over the head and when my cat has had enough, belts my dog in the face with her paw she dosn't scratch but it sounds painfull,
Answer:What a mean little lady she is! Cats like to have cats and dogs lick their heads because it's not a place they can readily clean. So the poor doggie is doing her a great service. And, on the other hand, my cats will go to my alpha male to have their heads licked and it is a recognition of his leadership. So your kitty must want to let the dog know that though she appreciates his ministrations she is still the boss.

  • My dog appears depressed can this happen and why?
She is a curly coat retriever she has a beautiful nature but is fairly anti social with strangers she is three yrs old and a big part of our family Thanks
Answer:YES !!! Dogs can get depressed. Have seen it in a couple of younger dogs we had, when we had to put an older dog down. They can also Pout ! Hard to tell what could be causing this. Is she getting a lot of attention? Not by your standards, but hers. Retrievers feel like they are part of the family...is she being left out of something she used to be part of? Could also be physical problems? Good Luck, and you might try sitting on the floor and paying some special attention to her, see how she reacts. Might sound funny but have you tryed talking to her and telling her how much she is loved...trust me it works. A message from one heart to another is always understood.
