Latest Dandie Dinmont Terrier Frequently Asked Questions:
I am really looking forward to one day getting a great dane. My friend has one and i hear great things about them. But i already have a small Dandie Dinmont Terrier, he's just a puppy, but is already very well-trained and understands that humans are higher on the chain of command. But would the contrast be to much? A Great Dane and a Dandie Dinmont???
Answer:Of course, all dogs have their own personalities, but I would think the odds are really high that a Great Dane would get along with your terrier. When I had Great Danes, they got along with all animals, little dogs, ducks, chickens, horses, ferrets, rabbits, etc. They call them gentle giants for a good reason.
Just about a week ago, someone asked what some of the rarest breeds were, and I answered (as far as AKC numbers) that Dandie Dinmont Terriers are always in the bottom 25 registrations...after seeing all the hype about Bill Cosby's dog, all I can think is 'Uh-oh...here come the puppy mills & backyard breeders trolling for dollars." Do you think the small, dedicated group of breeders will manage to protect this breed? Or will unscrupulous people be convincing enough as potential 'good owners' to buy their pups on AKC limited registrations & then quickly CKC/APRI (etc) re-register them and breed away?
Answer:I think the Dandie people are pretty protective -- but we'll have to see. I'm hoping that the public exposure will make them more wary. I haven't seen a huge increase in the number of Bull Terriers around since Rufus won last year -- although the Bull Terrier may be a harder breed to deal with than the Dandie. I'm more concerned about the PBGV, whose popularity has been increasing (it seems) over the years, anyway. I disagree with the person who said that "profits go up" for the breeders of a certain breed following a big showing at Westminster. Responsible breeders do not allow this sort of thing to influence their prices. Be cautious of the breeder who does. In fact, we generally find ourselves working harder to talk "the masses" out of our breed than catering to their demand after such public exposure. Just because there are more people wanting a breed, it doesn't mean that all of those people have the right home/lifestyle for that breed. I speak from experience in my own breed (thanks "Snow Dogs" and "8 Below" -- NOT!!)
Out of these dogs which would be suitable for a family of 5 containing a 11, 7 and 5 year old, and of course, parents (2)? Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu Yorkshire Terrier Pug Pomeranian Cairn Terrier Maltese Cesky Terrier Glen of Imal Terrier Brabancon Bruxellois Dandie Dinmont Terrier Bichon Frise Skye Terrier Lowchen Tibetan Terrier Australian Silky Terrier Tibetan Spaniel Cavalier English Toy Spaniel English Toy Spaniel Havanese Smooth Minature Dachaund Smooth Standard Dachaund American Eskimo Dog (Toy, Minature or Standard) West Higland White Terrier (Westie) Minature Schnauzer Also, the home is big with a big backyard to match. Please mention why the dog you picked from list is good and tell why. The 11 year old knows a bit too much about dogs and loves them all her life! lol, the 7 year old is quite and is'nt really fond of a dog unless its cuddly, but at the same time playful and the 5 year old is OK with any dog. The family is looking for a sweet, cuddly yet playful small dog, they have never owned a dog before and are looking for a small gentle with children dog. The 11 year old LOVES dogs, the 5 year old is OK with them but nothing snappy, and the 7 year old wants a dog thats playful but CAN NOT be snappy or likes to bite.
Answer:It is one thing to close your eyes and place your hand on the paper of dog breeds and go thats the one for me and it is another to truly know your breeds. Do not ask some one to pick for you. A dog is a long time thing. My co-worker and I agree having a dog is like having a child. Go on-line and read about the breeds. Do not pick it because it is cute, pick it because it is right for you. I love the look of Huskies but would never own one. They are to loud, they shed to much and need a lot of run time. But a woman I know would never ever trade in her Huskies for anything in the world. Ask your self simple questions like: Do I like to be active? Do I mind a dog that will bark? Do I have the time? VERY IMPORTANT. Lots of work goes into training. Buy the books talk to trainers, go to training classes. Go to dog shows, talk to the breeds, they know their breeds best after all. I have grown up with very many different breeds of dogs, mostly Lads, but I know a Lab is not right for me. Know the breeds, know the breeders, the does and don't. Health problems, temperament, these are all important things. Read, read and read some more before you decided. Dogs are not throw aways. They will not understand why they were not good enough for you. So make sure you are getting the right dog before you get the dog. And also remember that puppy will always turn into a dog.
