Latest Dogue de Bordeaux Frequently Asked Questions:
I have a 5 year old Lab Rot cross who used to live with a 86KG newfie who sadly died 5 months ago. I want another companion for him and I really like DDB. I have always found Dogs easier than Bitches so a male wold be my first choice. I have read conflicting information about what you can and can't keep with these animals. Can anyone with genuine experiecne advise.
Answer:As a DDB owner, I recommend getting opposite gender dogs and fixing them, of course. Our male does not like other males, plain and simple and it is still fairly common in the breed. He was brought into our home that already had an adult male and female mixed breed, and when he reached maturity began getting aggressive toward the other male. I know lots of people who have 2 males and have to keep them separated all the time. Usually they will be fine until the DDB hits about a year and a half, so the first year is fine, but after they grow up, often their behavior toward other males changes. ADD: I will say, he is fine in public on leash with other males. We can take him to dog shows and pet stores and he is good, but to have another male in the house, in what he sees as his territory is where it became problematic.
I would like to know a bit more history on DDB in England. When did they 1st get here, what standards they have here and what dates the new standards have come out. Thanks.
Answer:THe DDB club of England says around 1885. Search the site for additional info. : ) http://www.doguedebordeauxclub.co.uk/breed.htm
I keep reading about "slow and steady" growth, "human grade" puppy food, etc... I will be picking up my puppy within a couple of weeks and would appreciate any feedback. BEST!
Answer:Do not feed your puppy adult food as some people have suggested. He has masses of growth to do in his first year of life - he is growing from a puppy you can pick up to larger than many women in just one year. It takes a human a whole 18 years to achieve equivalent growth! He needs a lot of special nutrients to make sure that he has all the things necessary for strong growth. The breeder you are buying your puppy from will advise you on their recommended brand. Do not change from this for a few weeks while your pup settles in. If you do then decide to change to a different brand of food - go for a premium brand dry dog food, labeled for large breed puppies. Your dog will eat this until he is about 2 which is when he will have stopped growing. Don't supplement his diet with meat or human food - its just not necessary and will accelerate his growth which can lead to joint and bone problems. Dry food helps to regulate the amount large breeds eat - namely - not too much! So its a good choice - especially as you'll be buying car loads! Ignore the people that say its not natural - dog breeds have been raised on these foods for several decades so it can be argued that anything else is unnatural. Unless you plan to research and cook for your dog every day of his life - leave the feeding to the experts!

He was abused and very under feed he weighs about 84 and should weigh 120 plus. I really want to get him back on track and the fastest way possible. I am from Ontario ,Canada and I know the food differs from what is in the USA. Thanks!
Answer:Eagle Pack Holistic for large and giant breeds. Feed according to the directions on the package (my adult dogues get six cups per day). You don't want him to gain too fast as it will negatively impact his hips and heart. Also, if he is less than 2 years old, he will fill out more when his ribs spring.
