Latest English Setter Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Will a chocalate pointing lab be just as good in the field as a english setter.?
i don't know which one to get. Which one is a better hunter for pheasants.
Answer:I would go for a setter from PROVEN working field lines.

  • Is there a safe amount of coffee I can give my dogs. I have a french bull and an english setter.?
Will giving my dogs a small amount of coffee every couple days hurt them? My roommate refuses to stop giving the dogs coffee and when I expressed concern about it she just dumped more coffee in their bowls. This has been going on for months. I don't think it happens daily but will hurt them in the long run? Please, can someone give me numerical facts about how detrimental this type of activity can be?
Answer:Probably not but why would you? It certainly won't do anything beneficial for them. Small amounts of chocolate very rarely hurts dogs but that doesn't mean it's good for them. Caffeine and animals generally don't mix well.

  • Would an English setter be a reasonable wildfowling dog?
I'm looking for a versatile bird gundog that can point and retrieve game. Any help would be much appreciated. Also i'm in southern UK :)
Answer:English setters are excellent pointing dogs, but as a waterfowl dog they are not the ideal. Of course, the specialist is the Labrador retriever, but they are not pointing dogs. There are some strains of Labs that point, but do it far from ideal. I think you should consider the versatile breeds like German shorthair pointers and wire hair pointers.

  • My english setter is covered in fleas. he is on frontline and it worked great until he had to go ?
on post surgical antibiotics. since he is covered in fleas. we brush him daily, use the flea comb, have treated throw rugs and couch, change bedding every other day, and have given him baths. what else can i do? my poor baby looks miserable.
Answer:I think the antibiotics are probably a coincidence. What's more likely is you need to spray your house. It's not at all uncommon for regularly Frontlined animals to experience an infestation - eggs can lay dormant in your house for ages before suddenly hatching out. Get a decent housespray from the vets. You may need to spray twice, a week or two apart, and make sure you do everywhere, including wooden flooring, sofas and curtains. Don't bath the dog, this will not help and will inactivate the Frontline if done within 48 hours of applying the Frontline. It will also irritate his skin. Dogs should only be bathed if they've actually rolled in something gross and stink, otherwise it should be avoided, especially where fleas are involved. Chalice

  • Any English Setter breeders in New England?
looking for an orange and white male, to be my buddy.
Answer:Here is a wonderful website (English Setter Club of New England) in which you can request the Club to send you their breeder referals: http://www.escne.com/ If you were looking to adopt, check out these two sites: http://www.petfinder.com http://www.escne.com/html/rescue_adoption.html Personally, I do not know any ES breeders in the area. I wish you luck!
