  • How big would you expect a field spaniel black lab mix to get?
Just got a puppy. She is a field spaniel black lab mix. just wondering how big i can expect her to grow?
Answer:Sounds like a cute mix! Field Spaniels (male or female) can be expected to be approx 18" from shoulder to floor and weigh between 35 and 50 pounds. Female Labradors can be expected to be between 21" to 23" shoulder to floor and weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. And it goes without saying that those figures represent idealistic health conditions. (I've seen Labs weighing over 100 pounds! Please do not overfeed your dog!) With that said, it's not a bad idea to combine the values and find the average. It's not exact, but it'll give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. So: On the low side: You can expect her to be approx 20" shoulder to floor and around 45 pounds. On the high side: 21" shoulder to floor and 60 pounds. Between those two possibilities: You have 20.5" and 53 pounds... So, I would say you can expect your pup to come close to a full female Lab's size... probably just a little more trim, or less "stout", in build.

  • I am looking for infomation on the Field Spaniel from owners of one.?
I am looking to buy a Field Spaniel as a family pet and want to hear from owners of one what they are like personality wise. Are they good with little kids? Do they eat or bark a lot etc...? Do they tend to attach to one member of the family, as I have read they do this?
Answer:I'm very interested in Field Spaniels too :) I e-mailed some breeders once with questions and they were all happy to answer them. I'd highly suggest doing that... ask the questions you just asked. They certainly know their stuff, are helpful, and you may strike up a relationship with the breeder of your future dog :D I've also gone to a dog show to watch the breed and met some of the dogs and their breeders/handlers there.

  • Is it okay to keep a field springer spaniel if I don't want it to flush or retrieve game?
I was thinking of getting a springer spaniel, and I want a field springer because of the easy grooming, lighter bodies, and high energy. But I'm afraid to keep one because of the high stamina. I'm afraid it might chase cars or other small animals such as squirrels. I don't want it to get into an accident. What should I do? Also, can you train a field springer to NOT retrieve or flush game?
Answer:With a LOT of obedience work and plenty of exercise, you can teach the dog to come off the hunt whenever you command him to. You could probably even teach him to not do it at all but you're likely going to need a professional trainer. These dogs have it bred in to them to hunt. It is NOT an easy thing to break them of and the average trainer is often not qualified to do it. If hunting behaviors bother you, you may be better off just looking at a different breed. Asking a springer not to hunt is like asking a border collie not to herd. You are fighting their very nature and what may be a losing battle. To avoid car chasing, just put up a fence and keep your dog inside it. It's safer for him for many reasons, not the least of which is keeping him away from cars. Have you considered contacting a springer rescue? You can get on a waiting list for the right dog - one that is not heavy boned, has light to moderate coat, and little drive. They do come in although not as often as the drivey ones. Here is one rescue and there are unfortunately plenty more. :( http://www.springerrescue.org/
