  • What would you say I should get and why? A german shepherd or a doberman pinscher?
Well, I am looking for a high security dog that can guard my child when I'm gone. We are a high active family, we have a big house, and I had a very bad experience with buying a very unintelligent dog that has dirty dog syndrome, and I need a dog that is pretty smart, and I will be able to actively excersise with them.
Answer:For protection . . . I know some may disagree but, it is my opinion, that the only time is it a good idea to get a dog for the purpose of protection is in professional or agricultural situations and only when the owner/trainer is humane and knowledgeable of dog behavior and dominant dog training/handling. In all other situations - probably 99.9% - an alarm system, security fence, or other measures are much more appropriate and effective Guard dogs should NEVER be trainned to physically attack-they need to maintain the person in one spot to prevent them escaping. German Shepherds German Shepherds are very adaptable, extremely intelligent and eager to learn. These Alsatians can be trained to an extremely high level as guide dogs, avalanche dogs, tracking dogs and police dogs, Alsatians regularly win advanced obedience and field trials. Most Shepherds are reliable, self-confident, loyal to a fault, protective, brave and even-tempered. Unfortunately some breeders are offering shy and nervous Alsatians for sale. These dogs should be avoided at all costs as they can be dangerous. Alsatians are good with children and should be socialized and obedience trained when they are puppies. Do not train Shepherds as guard dogs as they are already protective of their families. Shepherds need lots of attention and physical and mental activity to keep happy. Alsatians make excellent watchdogs. German Shepherds do better with experienced dog owners. Shepherds need lots of physical and mental exercise. Some Shepherd breed lines are better adapted to field work and obedience competitions and some to conformation show dogs Dobermans Dobermans are usually protective but also are sweet and docile family dogs. This breed is brave, intelligent and loyal. However some Dobermans are very nervous and aggressive. This breed needs early socialization and obedience training when it is a puppy and this regime should be continued until the dog is at least 18 months old. Dobermans do fine with older children if they are raised with them. Male Dobes can be very aggressive with other male dogs and shouldn’t be trusted with small pets and strange children. Dobermans need lots of exercise and companionship and shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time. Dobermans are intelligent and easily trained but not by a novice dog owner. This breed should spend a significant amount of time at a dog training school. Dobermans make good guard dogs and good watchdogs and are wary of strangers. This breed is not recommended for the novice dog owner. Exercise: This is an active dog breed and it needs brisk and long daily walks to keep it happy and calm. Dobermans thrive on lots of exercise and all-out running as often as possible during the first few years. Dobermans prefer living indoors with their family. Again pick a breed that best suit you! If you can't train a simple Maltese terrier, then you are NOT ready for these larger dominating willful dog breeds. A 12year old is NO where experience enough to own these specialised dogs.

  • German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, or Rottweiler which one makes the best watch dog?
I want to buy a watch dog but I don't know which one is best. Can someone help me?
Answer:Here's a little secret. ANY dog that will bark at strangers is a good watch dog. Your dog only needs to be moderately alert. Any of the three breeds you've mentioned is a good deterrent dog. That means that if someone is thinking about breaking into your house, the sight of a large dog will probably change their minds. If you want an actual guard dog, you'd better be willing to do a LOT of training, because if you screw up guard dog training you're far more likely to lose your belongings in a lawsuit than you are from a criminal. Owners frequently screw up their dog's ability to be a watch dog. You absolutely must keep the dog in your home, or it will only be concerned with guarding your yard. When the dog does bark, investigate. Most owners just yell "SHUT UP" and go back to sleep. A dog must be sufficiently exercised and cared for, or it may bark all the time out of boredom. It's best to get a dog who suits you as a companion first.
