  • Do you have or know of anyone that has a german shepherd dog along with another breed of dog?
Does any body have or now of anyone that has a German shepherd and has another breed of dog that get along with each other. If so what breed and what are they like with each other? I am just curious as i have a german shepherd and am thinking of getting another dog just unsure on what breed of dog to get! So want to see what others are like!!!
Answer:There is no particular breed of dog guaranteed to get along with your GS. If you are considering another dog, let your dog help with the decision making. When we wanted to add another dog to our pack, we went to the animal shelter and picked out several dogs we believe would work well with our Akita. We then brought our dog to the shelter (a neutral space for both dogs) and let them get acquainted. The dog we thought would work best because she was so submissive actually was the dog that our current dog hated the most. You just never can be certain that two dogs, especially if one of them is known to be aggressive, will get along. With proper introductions and handling, I'm sure you can find another dog that will get along with your GS. Good luck!!

  • Can i have a german shepherd dog run outside my backyard without a backyard.?
I live in a suburban home in illinois, and just purchased a pup from a local breeder which I know very well. Good people they are. Anyway A have a big back yard, which would cost a lot a money and time to build a fence. I was wondering if I could by law ,under my supervision, allow my German shepherd to run freely around my yard while drinking a icy cold bottle of suds in the summertime. I would like to sometime in the future to play frisbee catch with my dog. I dont know if thats legally allowed if you dont have a fence. Im planning on taking the little guy to classes to make him more obedient.
Answer:I'm sure it's not legal. You should make your yard safe for the dog and safe for everyone else. You should not have bought a dog without a securely fenced yard for it.

  • Can I know if my german shepherd dog has hip problem or not? He looks perfect in terms of shape and color?
My GSD is 5 Months old he runs properly and fast. he does not limp i went through few articles online and they said hip problem is common in german shepherd dogs. I just wanted to find out if their is anyways i can find out if my dog is alright, without going to vet. I dont see any signs in him which could lead to hip problem.
Answer:If you have x-ray vision then great! Also given you don't know the answer to this question on face, what makes you able to properly assess sound movement in a dog - this takes very knowledgeable dog people a long, long time and a lot of experience to get even close to right.... If you got the dog from responsible, knowledgeable breeders then you would know the hip status of the dog's relatives and that will give you a lot of information. You can have preliminary xrays done to the puppy -- I have known dogs with perfectly beautiful, correct, sound movement that had no femur heads at six months of age so you assessment is useless. The preliminaries will give you an idea if there are problems you need to deal with now. Then at two years of age you can have films taken and sent to OFA to be checked for hip dysplasia.

  • What are the risks of shaving a German Shepherd dog?
I have two beautiful German Shepherds, both 12 years old now, which I brush daily. I enjoy the brushing and love my dogs. A friend of mine wants to buy a Shepherd and shave him to control shedding. I am really upset with her. Told her that she should not buy a Shepherd if she is going to shave him and that she should consider another breed. She insists that shaving is not only OK but recommended by Vets. Am I wrong or is she?
Answer:You are absolutely right. Long haired, double coated dogs do not need to be shaved.....ever. Unless the dog has passed the point of no return in the matting department, the best type of grooming for these dogs is a vigorous undercoat raking with a special tool that helps remove the undercoat, a bath, and a blow dry to help separate the hair. The guard hairs on the top that do not shed out provide protection against the rays of the sun, and actually insulate the dog from the heat. Dogs left with just the undercoat WILL shed. It may shed shorter hair, but it will still shed. Sometimes the hair will NOT grow back. The older the dog, the less likely the guard hairs will regrow. The undercoat will regrow, but the upper hair sometimes does not. Skin that is damaged by UV rays that they would not otherwise be exposed to, can take a long time to heal, and the dog may have scaling and dandruff for quite some time after the hair has regrown. Unless she wants to shave the dog for medical reasons she should consider another breed. GSDs shed. That's something that needs to be considered and accepted. In my opinion the cons far outnumber the pros.
