I have put in an application to adopt a puppy from a local shelter. She is being fostered so living in a home environment. She is a german wirehaired pointer mix. I will get to meet her next weekend. I would like to be able to ask questions that will help me make a informed desision about whether or not to bringing this puppy home. She is 7 months old and already spayed. Does anyone have a list of questions one should ask? Here are some things I have thought about: Is she house trained? socialized ? (animal, children) What is her temperament and has she been temperament tested? What is her medical history? Is she up to date on shots? Can I get all the vet records and talk to the vet? Any good questions or web pages that you could think of that would help me would be welcome. Thanks in advance
Answer:Your questions are all good. I would also ask about their return policy. What happens if the dog doesn't work out? Personally I have a 30 day, 100% money back guarantee. Not a rescue standard, but I would rather have my dogs back than dumped. A good rescue will also have a contract. Read it carefully and know what you're signing. I currently have a German Short Hair Pointer Female and want to her 2 more playmates and I live on a farm so I can which out of these should I get: Akbash Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog Bergamasco Borzoi Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler German Wirehaired Pointer Leonberger Havanese Pomchi Ok I have had one of each of these breeds at one point in my life so I know how to care for them thats why I would like to get one or 2 of these if you don't know what one of them is look it up but which ones should I get?
Answer:I'd suggest the Borzoi and GWP to go with your GSHP. Or possibly an ACD, since you live on a farm. I wouldn't really suggest the smaller breed/mixes simply because you have the land to support larger breeds, and larger breeds would most likely provide better playmates to your GSHP
Let's say that you have a show champion German Wirehaired Pointer...She was purchased as "filler" so that her older sister could finish her championship adding the extra point to the breed.. O.K...NEVER label a dog as filler, I figured that one out...She beat her Dual Champion sire in the show ring 4 times and was a champion at barely 7 months... That's way beyond my question but now you have some history... At 4 years old I finally decided to breed my Champion baby...I found a Dual champion in Iowa and the owner was MORE than happy to offer her stud for pick of the litter... It was July, a hot one...110 degrees and 90% humidity... Well in advance the stud dog owner (also a field trialer) knew that my dog is a HOUSE DOG, NOT USED TO THE HEAT FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF HOURS. I was assured that my baby would be kept in the house, in air conditioning, with her dual champion... When I was on the 2 hour drive to pick up my baby after a successful breeding, my cell phone rang...It was It was the stud dog owner very coldly informing me that my dog had dies of a heat stroke...On her back porch, in a plastic crate... What would you do ? I let it go because I was in mourning...Beside myself... But now I've started thinking about it again and I truely believe that this person is a CRIMINAL. What would you do ? Yes, I did manage to drive up there and pick her up...The breeder did not just want to keep my baby...I buried her on farmland next to a pond... sidenote.. When I got there, I was offered a "pick of the litter" all white male from a previous breeding that the breeder intended on keeping...I declined, nothing could replace my baby... A few days later, I decided that I would take the pup "just because" I called, my calls were never returned.. I emailed, my emails were never returned...
Answer:Holy crap! Why was ANY dog left outisde in a plastic crate (which holds more heat in)???? Yes, I would be contacting the local ASPCA for advice!
