For our next dog, we want to get a bigger breed because they are usually better with kids. All the miniature schnauzers my family has ever had have been terrible with kids, no matter if they've been raised with kids or not. I really like the schnauzer's intelligence and ease of training, personality, and not to mention, they're good lookin' dogs! So, are standard or giant schnauzers better with kids?
Answer:Miniature Schnauzers have been bred for a more "companion" temperament, while Standards and Giants still have more of a "working" temperament. None of them put up very well with kids who don't respect their boundaries, and can be snappy. Of the two, I'd look more into Giants than Standards, simply because I think there are more Giants out there and I think they may have been bred a little more away from the "working" temperament than the Standards. Of course, it ultimately comes down to the individual dog. Consider checking with a Schnauzer Rescue group (of any size) that fosters their dogs in a home environment, and you may be able to find one who will be a good match with kids.
Answer:Hi there... Giant Schnauzers can have varied personalities..I groom 4 of them..the females (for some reason) seem better adjusted and calmer than the males. The males are more timid (believe it or not, it's true with these ones). Are you planning on an "intact male" or a neutered one? All dogs need to be socialized...so if you are getting a puppy, it's fairly simple...if you are getting an adult, it is a little more complicated. You don't mention your other dog breeds so I cannot say if there may be any "issues" that way... GOod luck to you...GS can make great pets but because of their size you need to make sure they are well socialized AND WELL TRAINED.
