I live in the country, he will have lots of room to hunt ,I have two outside that came from a shelther I have wanted a Glen of Imaal for years. Can some one help
Answer:Congrats on your decision to purchase a Glen of Imaal! I hear they are wonderful dogs. There are about 30 different registries in the US alone. AKC is the most well known, and therefore the only one allowed for showing. You can breed under any other registry, but because of the well known issue, AKC pups generally sell for more. DNA listed nest to a sire on the pedigree usually means that he is a stud dog. They are required to show their DNA for tracing the bloodlines. OFA is a certification done by the vet proving that the hips/joints are good, and have little to no risk of luxation(moving/slipping out of socket)

  • What kind of dog/puppy should I get?
I've had a Lab/Germen Shepherd mix for 3 years and I have been doing very well him (no behavior or dominace problems). I've been looking into buying a young dog or puppy. I've read a couple of dog breed books and researched the internet to refresh my memory. Here are 10 breeds I like and think would suit my lifestyle: 1. Border Terrier 2. Fox Terrier 3. Glen of Imaal Terrier 4. Basset Hound 5. Kookerhondje 6. English Springer Spainel 7. Lancashire Heeler 8. Great Swiss Mountain Dog 9. Picardy Shepherd 10. Shiba Inu Here's my regualr day: Leave the house at 8:20 and get home around 4:20. Someone will at my house in the time between that time but my leave a 2-3 times for no more then two hours. I have a medium sized house and a large backyard with a pool. I'm looking for a dog less then 45 pounds and under 20 inches tall. My Lab/Germen Shepherd mix is very submissive and doesnt really like dogs bigger then him, he weighs 70 pounds and is 24 and a half inches tall. He is very gentle and kind to other dogs but he does play and chase. He goes to the local dog park once or twice every week so he knows how to interact with other dogs. So, I need a dog that will be sweet to him and not to domiant, but will teach him to really get along with other dogs. He was raised in a puppy mill and then went to a foster home with 5 other dogs and they kinda beat up on him , this is sorta why he's kinda like that.
Answer:It's good that you're looking into getting another dog. No dogs like to be alone all day so if you can afford it two dogs is much better than one. As far as a breed that suits your particular needs there are a few breeds on your list that I would say are not a good idea. Greater Swiss Mountain dogs tend to be as big if not bigger than shepherds and if you want something smaller, this would not be a good choice. Shiba Inus can be very agressive toward other dogs so even though they're smaller, this may not be the best choice either. As far as the others my top three pick from my first pick down would be the Kooikerhonjie, Basset hound, and Lancashire heeler. These will all be smaller than your current dog and they all have temperments that would suit your needs well. The others tend to be either overly dog-agressive or too high energy for your situation. Good luck with your decision and I hope all works out for the best.

  • Question for dog groomers about clippers...?
I'm learning to groom my dog myself. I've been doing fairly well with the Andis clipper I use on my husband. My question is what is the difference between clippers for humans and clippers for animals? They seem to cost twice as much or more. Is it quieter? vibrates less? what? Also, can you recommend a good grooming book or DVD? I have a terrier mix. I have a hard time getting the shape of her head. She looks like a Glen of Imaal Terrier. http://www.glen-of-imaal-terrier.com/index.html
Answer:Professional clippers usually clip better and quicker. They usually are quieter and they usually vibrate less, and they also can take more use than the human ones that you can purchase (not the salon ones, they are comparable to the professional ones for groomers). You will probably have to hand cut (with scissors) the head of the dog in order to get the shape. It is really hard to give good shape with clippers unless you are really experienced. I would just get a nice pair of shears (most petstores have them, and the kit may have came with one) and then just free hand it. It takes a little more work, but it looks a lot better.

  • Can we help this Dog?
Me and my boyfriend are thinking of adopiting a Glen Of Imaal Terrier from a shealter that we found. The thing is the lady told us that if we wanted to have kids in the next 10 years we shouldnt get this dog. My question is can you brake a dog from bitting kids? the moment we saw this dog we both fell in love with it. we dont want kids now (both 23) but when were about 26/27 we do. We have been looking for this breed for so long and since we cant afford a a puppy, we turned to adoption. the dog is about 3-4 years old. So can he be broken from bitting???
Answer:Honestly, if the shelter staff is telling you that this is not a good dog with kids, then I would not adopt it. Aggression is very difficult to resolve and children are bitten far more frequently than adults because they don't understand what triggers the aggression in the dog. A trainer may help but the dog will never be 100% safe, especially around kids. There are lots of dogs in shelters that are great with kids. Please adopt one of those. You don't want to put your future kids at risk or your dog.
