  • Name for a male Gordon Setter?
We're getting a male Gordon Setter this weekend for my birthday and are wanting an unusual name without being too silly. We don't want the usually "Hank" or "Ranger." Maybe something with a Celtic sound since they are Scottish/Irish dogs?
Answer:Here are some Gaelic names and their meanings: "Brogan" - Shoe "Cana" or "Canagon" (KON a or KON a gawn) - little warrior or wolf cub Conall (KUN all) - Strong as a wolf Lonan - Blackbird Ailchu (El coo) -- Gentle dog I really like Ailchu and Brogan!

  • Great Dane or Gordon Setter?
i want to get a dog, but i am not sure which one to chose from. Either a gordon setter or great dane? i love them both, and i just want a really good dog which i can take for walks and become great friends with. also which dog tends to bark more and be boisterous in the house? which is most ideal as a first pet? thanks.
Answer:Gordons require much more involved grooming than Danes - are you willing to commit to grooming your dog every day? Gordons are more prone to behavior disorders if they do not receive enough socialization and both breed MUST go through obedience training. Gordons, like all setters, also tend to be cat chasers. If you ever wanted to get a cat this could pose a problem. I think Gordons are awesome dogs but would not recommend them for a first time dog owner. I am not sure I would recommend a Dane for a first time dog owner either, but I'd say a Dane before a Gordon. Vintage Collies

  • Do all Gordon Setter dogs drink with their whole snout under water if they have access to a bucket of water?
My son's pup puts his whole snout up to his eyes under water and blows bubbles while he drinks before he knocks over the whole bucket .
Answer:I think some of our larger breeds do that. I have a boxer and she does the same thing. Gordons are nice dogs too, I love their colour. Try to get a sense of humour or build a five sided box with a whole cut out of the top. Make sure the whole is the size of your water bowl. If you are not handy, you can buy these for your dog. By adjusting them to a certain height, it help the dog drinking.

  • Gordon Setter and Dalmatian?
I had a Gordon setter when I was little and he was great I loved him. I want to get another one but I would also like to get a dalmatian. I was thinking that if I got both when they are young they could grow into each other instead of different ages. Do you think these two dogs would have problems with each other. There are also cats in the house
Answer:Provided you are there to supervise them most of the day and are not simply bringing two puppies into the house and leaving them, this should work out fine. We have always kept at least two back in every litter we've bred, and we have never, ever, had problems getting them to listen to us, rather than to each other!!! I would advise you not to buy litter brothers as there can quite often be a dominance issue as they mature. They may well get along fine to begin with (and this applies to non litter mates boys, but of a similar age too) but as maturity kicks in, they could become competitive. It's not a combination I'd know much about, but Dalmatians are high energy dogs, and quite hard to train and I'd imagine being a gun dog, a Gordon Setter would be active too, but perhaps more placid. Our first two male Bassets were born 10 months apart, and they got along fine, for the most part, provided I watched potential trigger points. But believe me, they listened to me first!! Obviously the cats will need their space and the dogs theirs - but just know the cats will rule.
