Latest Great Dane Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the best companion for a great dane?
I've been searching for another dog. We already have an awesome great dane, but I think it would be cool if he had a friend. Just wondering if anyone has a good answer. I was considering a boston terrier...
Answer:One of my friends' family has a great dane named morgan, who has taught herself how to open the car doors and hop in at will. We know each other from showing horses, and Morgy loves being around them. They also own a daschund named Doodle, and Morgy and Doodle are best friends. They seem like a very incompatible pair, but they are so cute together. My jack russell, Nutmeg, also loves Morgan and cannot wait until the fair when she can run around with Morgan throughout the week. I think a little dog would be great, as well as even out the size!

  • How big foes a great dane get at 7 months of age?
I am moving to brazil towards the end of the year, and I wanted to get a great Dane. Now, to be able to transport on a plane it cant be over a certain ammount of weight and height. Does any one know the average height and or weight of a 7month great dane? I didnt want to buy in Brazil, because I am from there, and reliable breeders are hard to find. And far. Brazil has no quarantine Laws.
Answer:Here is a GD growth chart for reference: http://www.all-about-great-danes.com/great-dane-growth-chart.html 70-110 pounds which is quite a range. Most dogs are about half their adult weight at about 5 months so, I would say, the 110 upside of the range is too high. A good estimate would be 80-90 lbs. I would also us the middle of that range for height so around 30 inches at the shoulder.

  • How big should a great dane's dog house be?
My husband is planning on building our dog a dog house for outside. We have great dane mix puppy only about 5 months old, he's far from being full grown so i'm not sure what his full grown measurements will be. How big should an average great danes dog house be? we've looked at a few designs and we want to build one with a door on the front left side and inside it has a little half wall kind of thing so he can go to the right side and be blocked from the wind and rain and everything else. any advice would be greatly appreciated! Rescue Member - STOP JUDGING... anywhere in my question did i say i lock him outside all the time? No i did not. I love my dog and he is a great companion. did it ever occur to you that when i do put him outside on occasion, that i would like him to feel just as loved as if he was inside with me? have you ever had so much company that you want your dog outside so he doesn't bother them? i don't want to just put him out in my back yard, this house is for him to be in when he just can't be inside with me! Thank you for all your help!
Answer:I like the idea of a center wall so he can go from side to side whichever is better for him at the time. Also, the height from the ground must be high, for a dane I'd say a foot with skirting around it to keep the wind out from under. Don't use any cedar woods in the house not even some in the flooring. The temptation of it for repelling fleas isn't worth it as it doesn't do that great of a job to begin with plus the cedar isn't good for breathing in the odor and can cause asthma and even digestive problems. He needs to be able to stand without his head touching the ceiling. Bedding should not be straw. Find good crate/doghouse bedding with raised sides. They come in many sizes, thicknesses and such. They are not cheap. Try a catalog from Jeffers 1-800-Jeffers or a Tractor Supply or Agway. You want the bedding to be washable with a zip off cover. Also, throw in a few blankets in addition so he can make a nest to his liking. You don't say your climate but with wanting the house to be two sided inside to get away from wind and rain I'm thinking you're not in southern CA or TX or FL. I hope this is only for his comfort and protection while being outside during daytime hours on some days and that he will not be a 24/7 outside dog. Good Luck

  • How to teach my great dane not to jump up?
My great dane is around a year old now. I bought her from a family who never took the time to socialize her or train her. I've taught her sit and stay. But when she is exited she jumps up and I'm totaly not for that behavior does anybody have any tips?
Answer:I have heard that when they jump they are trying to get to your face so turn around & give them your back & they will stop. (You can also say 'down' or 'no' when you do this.) Keep doing this & eventually she should get it. My friends doberman used to jump on me, I did this turning away method & he stopped. Good Luck!

  • How can I prevent bow legs or knuckling in a Great Dane puppy?
I am getting my 10 week old Great Dane puppy shipped to me on Thursday. I've done some research and I see that Great Dane legs are prone to bowing or knuckling. What can I do to prevent that? I know placing the puppy on a low protein diet is one way but is there anything else I need to be careful of? Any advice from Great Dane owners is much appreciated.
Answer:Food is important as you already know as well as buying a dog from a reputable breeder. Making sure your pup has good solid surfaces to walk on with no sliding or slick floors is a big help also. Here is a great site on danes with plenty of articles on their particular health issues. http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/knuckling_over.htm
