I am thinking of getting a great pyrenees, what are your thoughts... What is your opinion of them? I currently have a golden retriever, bunny, and a lovebird. Would they get along or should I keep them away from each other. I am looking for a breeder or rescue shelter for Great Pyrenees'. Any help with any info would be great!!!
Answer:You have some great answers here...I just wanted to add a few points for you to consider!! GP are absolutely wonderful dogs, but they are certainly not the dogs for everyone! They were bred to think independently (without human input/direction), so GP can be quite difficult to train, to say the least!! They are stubborn and hard-headed. They are also a VERY vocal breed. They will bark and bark and bark when outdoors, it is their instinct. Especially at night!!!! Also, they are a guard dog by instinct, not through training. They often are not welcoming of strangers/visitors who enter your yard/home (which could be a good thing, but it also can be a negative). They also are known to be diggers and destructive when left without a "job" to do. This breed absolutely NEEDS a 6ft fence! They can clear a 5 footer! And they will not respect an unground fence. And with all large breeds, life expectancy is not long at all. They are prone to devastating genetic and health issues, such as HD. Larger breeds are more expensive (trust me!)...more expensive to feed, more expensive medications, more expensive grooming costs (and YES they shed like crazy! White hairs everywhere!!), and more expensive vet bills! I recently spent over $300 JUST on antibiotics for 14 days for one of my big furkids, it really adds up, and fast! Since they are so big they also need to be one two heartworm preventions a month (THAT adds up!) and sometimes even two flea/tick topicals a month. Just a few things for you to think about!!! If you have no issues with anything I have mentioned, go for it!!! GP are one of my favorite breeds.
I looked at adult great pyrenees and their fur is straight. But I've seen a healthy 8month old great pyr pup with wavy fur. Why is that?>
Answer:I believe so. Just check out http://www.akc.org/breeds/great_pyrenees/ for more information.
I have several brushes that I use on my Great Pyrenees but I am wondering if there is one that is especially good for their coat type. Any other grooming tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Answer:First I brush mine with a rake brush, to loosen up and untangle his inner coat which in GP can get REALLY matted if not properly taken care of! (personal experience LOL), then I use a soft brush on the top coat just to get all the excess hair that are now loose from the rake brush. They sell both of them at petsmart, here's the link and good luck!! :) http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751486
My family just got a great pyrenees puppy yesterday and the breeder said it was 8 weeks old but is a fairly large pup, how much do they normally weigh around 8 weeks? what do you think is a good name? she's pure whit and very friendly, and will spend 90% oh her time with the cows in the pasture?? any ideas...
Answer:I would say around 25 pounds because these dogs can get huge, but I'll star it so a large breed person will take a look.
it gets like 120 degrees out here, my dogs have a shed with a swamp cooler on it to get into, pools and trees and tons of water. do you think that a great pyrenees could be happy here?
Answer:Absolutely not. They come from cold Mountain regions and have a VERY thick large coat. If you want an LGD consider an Anatolian shepherd. Like great pyrenees but with shorter coats.
