Latest Havanese Frequently Asked Questions:

  • How do you find Havanese or Coton De Tulear in Australia?
I have been looking all over the internet and in Australia these wonderful breeds are very rare, I am in Queensland and in the two weeks I have been looking, I have only managed to find one Havanese (from a breeder, selling for $2000) and one Coton De Tulear. Both were in NSW and I really don't want to have to subject a puppy to too much travel or pay a fortune for one from a breeder.
Answer:http://www.dogzonline.com.au/. The best way to guarantee the health and quality of your pup is to buy from a dedicated breed enthusiast i.e a registered breeder. Sometimes breeders may have older dogs available for sale or even giveaway. The ones that don't quite meet breed standards or have been returned from another owner. There may be a rescue service run by the breeders or a breed club.

  • How do i train my Havanese to walk offleash and stay with me?! Serious answers only plz!?
Hi, i have a 9 month old havanese, but i just got her 2 months ago and i'm trying to teach her to walk off leash because we have had a couple close calls when she runs into the front yard from the back! So i just want a step by step way to teach my baby off leash!
Answer:I've found that lots of walks away from the house stops your dog from going out there because he/she pretty much thinkd of it as "been there done that" Kind of attitude and is more likely to just follow you.

  • How can I stop my Havanese puppy from howling so much?
Hello! We just brought home a 12-week old Havanese puppy last Wednesday. He is absolutely wonderful and incredibly smart...he doesnt mind his crate and sleeps 6-7 hours through the night without an accident. He feels completely comfortable with us (my boyfriend and myself) and is probably TOO attached to me since I have been home with him every day since he has been here. The only problem is that when we leave him in his playpen, he HOWLS and whines SO much. We leave him in there about 10-15 mins at a time, with us in the house and we have left for about 20 minutes since we got him and left him in the pen and we get back and we HEAR him howling and barking from down the hall by the elevators! He came from a farm in Connecticut, to downtown NYC, so the sights and sounds are definitely a huge adjustment to him, but he has been really good with everything else except being left alone. Anyone have any ideas or helpful tips?? I go back to work on Jan 9th and am scared to leave him.
Answer:HI I just got a pek and maltese and I put their playpen in front of the TV and it keeps them quite, or you might want to try the radio or getting them a playmate. lAMMY

  • Do Havanese dogs and Ragamuffin cats get along?
I have read that Havanese dogs get along well with cats, but on the Ragamuffin page, I've read that they are compassion-able, but it mentioned nothing about dogs. So will someone with experience of cats and dogs tell me whether they will get along together? Thanks!
Answer:Cats and dogs do get along, and even play together, but it is more a matter of the individual animals than their breeds. A friend of mine has a pappillon dog and a stray cat she rescued, and they play and cuddle on the couch together. The best thing to do is take your dog (or cat not sure which you have already) to a friend's house that has the other type of animal and see how your dog (cat) reacts to their cat (dog). From there, get a cat that is used to being around dogs or vice versa. It really comes down to the personality or each individual animal. Even if they are not best friends, most dogs and cats can learn to live together.

  • When is best to spay a Havanese puppy?
I have a 7 month old Havanese and the breeded tells me to not have her spayed until 12 -18 months old. The vet says before 9 months. Who do I listen to? And what is best for this breed?
Answer:The vet is suggesting spaying at this age to prevent an accidental litter. Unless you can keep your bit*ch safely confined when she is in heat..and that means not letting her in the yard off leash without your supervision, spaying now is the right thing to do. The breeder suggests over 12 months because the growth plates are not closed until the dog is between 12-18 months. Spaying a dog before the growth plates close can result in a dog growing out of standard and developing to be what breeders refer to as 'long in the leg'. The decision of when to spay is yours.
