  • how do you keep people away from your dog when on a walk?
People always want to run up and pet my dog when we are on a walk. I tell them to please STAY AWAY he does not like other people but the response I get is usually something like 'all dogs love me!' then they try and touch him which he hates. He is not a mean dog and I know he would not bite somebody but it is still annoying. When I get angry at people and take my dog away they act like I am the most evil person ever. It is annoying. Why does everyone HAVE to touch my dog? And my dog is an Ibizan hound. Ibizans are a naturally reserved breed and only like the people in their family. It does not mean they were not socialized well as puppies. k9: I am very polite to people at first. It is only after they disrespect me and my dog that I get angry and walk away. I am an introverted person. It's a personality trait, get over it. Same with Ibizan hounds. They are reserved. And yes, people are a-holes because my dog is not PUBLIC PROPERTY for anyone to grab. Are you the kind of person who just pets anyone's dog with out asking? I hope not.
Answer:You could lie and tell people that your dog is a service dog in training and cannot be touched. I know that is very dishonest but that is a good excuse for people to just look and not touch. You could even make a vest to put on him that says "Service dog in training".

  • What breed of dog would be best for me?
Basically I've wanted a dog all my life and it looks like I'll be moving to a rough area of town and as a female on my own I would like a sizeable dog that will defend if necessary. I am used to dobermans and labs but my mum is afraid of dobes and rottweilers so that rules them out and I'm not so keen on labs. I thought about maybe a GSD or an estrela mountain dog (depending on space) but I know a lot of GSDs are badly bred. I'd rather not anything quite as work driven as a Malinois. I was tempted by the beauceron but they seem to be very rare in this country. Please nothing that drools (no boxers or staffs either)! I have dog experience but it will be the first dog I have on my own so I'd rather not anything especially temperamental. I love the large sighthounds but I'm worried I might not have a big enough garden to let them gallop (would LOVE a borzoi or ibizan hound). I quite like rhodesian ridgebacks and giant schnauzers (though I'm not so keen on the wire coat). Any suggestions?
Answer:Rhodesians are lovely dogs, sophisticated while conveying a bit of a "tough" image for your neighbors. I've had several dog show friends that have them and I've always thought them to be really wonderful dogs. They don't have the "stigma" of the bully breeds or the protection breeds. They are also very intelligent and friendly. You might enjoy a well-socialized male. Socialization gives dogs the experience and confidence to distinguish who's a "bad guy" and who's a good guy, and this breed is definitely big enough and strong enough (bred as lion hunters!) to defend you. As a trainer I've always found my neutered males to be loyal to death (not as persnickity as my hormonal girls!). Something else handy in a bad neighborhood (I live in one too)... I've taught my dogs to "speak" but didn't use speak as the command. Teach them to bark when you say something like "Go get 'em". If you ever encounter someone questionable, that sounds intimidating... to see you say "get em" and the dog go into a barking frenzy. I had 2 drunks staring in my door one summer night at 2 am and when I smelled their cigarettes through the screen, sent my Border Collie (a 55 lb male) to the door with "Go get 'em" and he went off. My hubby talked to the men, and he's huge, but what got rid of them was my seemingly vicious dog! They were terrified of him. Oh and Rhodesians are an easy care short coat... always a bonus! But get him a winter coat if you live in a cold area. If you're unsure of the malnois energy level... SKIP ON BORDER COLLIES!!! Although loyal and protective of people (NOT property) they are wired and needy and must have constant entertainment. If you think you might marry and have children anytime with in the dog's life span (12-17 years commonly) they aren't good with small kids. Yes they are the smartest breed in the world, but that's no bonus either. If bored they invent theri own fun, eating furniture and clothing (one of mine has a pathological obsession with jeans zippers, no clue why), mattresses, wallboard, anything. If you're in an apartment, unless you're a marathon runner, show dog agility, or want to travel to sheep herding lessons, you'll never get your security deposit back!!! And crates don't help. I've owned several accomplished BC houdinis, crate type notwithstanding. Maybe a tiger pen would keep them in! BC's are nuts, and you have to be a special kind of crazy yourself to truly appreciate them!
