  • Irish Setters and Irish Red and White Setters?
Does anybody own them? Are they good dogs usually? Easy to train? Is their coat hard to maintain? Are the good with kids? I'm asking this because they are really gorgeous dogs and I'm considering getting one so tell me all you know! Thanks!
Answer:I have an Irish (Red). Good dogs? Hahaha ... define "good"! If you mean calm, well-behaved, etc., then NO they are not good dogs! They are full of mischief, highly energetic, and can be very devious and destructive when they want to be. They're also really not all that bright. However, if by "good" you mean affectionate, even-tempered, and devoted ... YES! No breed in the world has a more pleasant temperament and happy approach to life. They're very outgoing and funny! They love everyone and get along well with other animals ... however I wouldn't recommend the breed for a family with small children because it's a LOT of dog and an Irish is just too boisterous (especially when young ... some of them do settle down after a few years, but some never do). Training? Well, they certainly need it! They're a bit difficult to train because they're very distractible (ADHDog) and "short-attention-span" doesn't begin to describe them. But they do learn easily (they forget just as easily!) so training is a neverending thing. The coat is VERY demanding. If you don't brush it out religiously, it mats and snarls. If the dog gets wet ... it's a mess. Another thing about the coat ... spaying/neutering can destroy it. The breed is prone to "spay coat" or "neuter coat", which is to say it turns fuzzy and dull, with a lot of white in it. Doesn't happen to ALL of them, for some reason, but when it does (and it did to mine), it really diminishes the appearance of the dog. They require regular grooming if you want to keep them looking neat ... ears and paws especially get shaggy in a hurry, and you'll have to learn to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you. You also have to CLEAN the ears constantly because they're very prone to both bacterial and fungal ear infections. Yes they are gorgeous and I love them (obviously!) but as others said ... RESEARCH the breed fully before deciding. Go to some dog shows and talk to breeders and owners. If you decide to go for it, please acquire one from either a reputable breeder or breed rescue. If you buy one from a newspaper ad or online ad, you may be getting one with a very cracked-out temperament. There have been health and temperament issues in the breed due to backyard breeding over the years, and I wouldn't buy one unless I knew and trusted the source.

  • How do i stack a dog??? Setter???? Any dog?
hi i was wondering how to stack a 6month old puppy she is a pure breed and i was wondering how to stack her she is an irish red and white setter but i know nothing about stacking thanks for your help what thats not stacking 1st answer what? thats not stacking
Answer:http://www.dragonflyllama.com/%20DOGS/Writing/confstack.html If you plan on showing her in conformation, find a breed mentor in your local breed club who shows or who can introduce you to a good handler who can show you in person how to properly stack her.

  • How Can I make it easier to give my puppy ear meds?
My 6 1/2 Irish Red and White Setter puppy needs to be given ear medication 3 times a day in both of his ears for an ear infection. You have to squirt it in his ears. This is a job that takes 3 people he runs and twists and makes it almost impossible to do. Afterwards he avoids the people who gave him the medication and acts very wary around everyone. This can be upsetting because he is usually a very affectionate dog. How can I make giving this medication easier for both me and my dog?
Answer:Have a treat in your hand ready and let him see it, as soon as you have done give him the treat and make a fuss of him. My Lab needs her ears cleaning twice a week and medicating regularly, this is how I got her to let me do it. Now she will lay down ready when she sees the ear wash or drops, and then want her treat when I've done.
