Anybody have and Irish Setter? Why are they so hard to find? Anybody know any breeders? I live in Georgia and don't see any in the classifies. Don't know anyone who has one but used to play with my aunt and uncles when I went up to Michigan. Ansers to any or all of these questions would be helpful.
Answer:I have an Irish. You can somewhat see her head in my avatar. I can tell you the absolute last place you want to look is in the newspaper. Like all purebred dogs it is important to seek a reputable breeder that does all the appropriate health testing. Part of the reason they are hard to find is because they have dropped in popularity. They are down to the 63rd ranked AKC registered breed. They seem to be dropping yearly, too. That is good news for the breed. The more people who are breeding them the worse off the breed often becomes. You will want to start your search with the Irish Setter club of America website. They do have a breeder referral section. I can think of 4 breeders off the top of my head in Georgia. That doesn't mean any of them have puppies though. I do know of a litter that is due in about a month, but it is in a different state. It is likely you will have to find a puppy quite a distance from you. You may want to consider adopting one from Irish Setter rescue. I've seen some great pets come through rescue. Feel free to email me through my profile page. I'll be happy to help you.
I love the new Webkinz Irish Setter, but coming up with the name is hard! I was thinking maybe Lucky, because it's a dog's name, and Ireland has the four leaf clover, or maybe Dublin, Penny or Copper. Do you guys like these names? Do you have any other ideas?
Answer:I like the name Copper. It sounds cute :) If you're still hesitant, though, I would suggest babynames.com. I use it all the time when I can't think of a name for a character in my stories. You can choose the gender, the language, etc. Hope that helps :)
I have a 1yr old irish setter, His name is Dann. But hes WAAY diffrent from other dogs. he thinks hes the prince. And he also is very lazy, Wants you to personally feed him kernel buy kernel. And he wines and BARKS like crazy. He is VERY social. Is this normal?
Answer:Irish Setters originated as gundogs in their native Ireland, and their popularity soon spread, thanks to the beauty of their rich mahogany coat and their enthusiasm as bird dogs. They're friendly, mischievous, and inquisitive, with a high energy level. This is a bold and boisterous family friend with the potential to do well in many canine sports and activities.
