  • My Irish Terrier is 6.5 years old. She broke her leg when she was a puppy and has problems sometimes. Remedy?
She is quite big for an Irish terrier. About the size of an Airedale. Around 60 lbs. So there is some height and weight on her. She has problems in the morning. It is her back leg. We took her to the vet many times and she was given a doggy pain medication. Rimadyl or something like that. She also drinks a tablespoonful of syrupy medicine for joint stiffness. Sometimes the leg is bothering her and sometimes it is not. She hobbles sometimes and other times she runs. Like when she is with her adopted soft coated wheaten terrier sister and they spot a squirrel. Usually the wheaten could care less about the squirrel. The Irish is the watchdog of the two. The wheaten is happy go lucky. Kind of an odd combo to have a wheaten and an irish but they have gotten along since day one when we introduced them to each other when they were puppies. The wheaten gets along w/ every dog she meets. The Irish gets along w/ SOME dogs she meets. Anyways, any remedies for the leg?
Answer:My oldest sheltie broke his left rear leg when he was about 1 year old. Over time he has developed arthritis in that leg. He seems to skip / bobble on it when it is bothering him (runs on three legs instead of all 4 with the third leg barely touching the ground). I have asked several different people and 3 vets what they would recommend (I have heard bad things about Rimadyl and other anti-inflammatory prescription meds and was looking along the lines of a supplement / lifestyle change rather than a prescription medication to manage my old pal's pain and stiffness). Here is a list of things that were recommended to me that you can do to make your friend more comfortable. 1. If you aren't doing so already. Feed a food designed for Senior dogs. I feed Science Diet Senior Formula, but there are several good ones out there. Monitor weight and keep your dog on the lean side. Although it is hard to think of a 6.5 year old dog as a senior, most medium sized dogs are considered seniors at 7 years old. (5 years for large breeds). 2. Feed a daily supplement containing human grade glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. Dr.'s Foster and Smith's Joint Care 2 or Joint Care 3 are both excellent choices. I use the Joint Care 2 formula. 3. Purchase a bed for your dog that contains orthopedic foam (at least 3 - 4 inches deep). This type of bed is easier on the joints and offers the most support for your dog. And because it is firm, your dog will have an easier time getting out of the bed in the mornings. You can find these types of beds at most of the major pet supply chains or you can order one off of the internet. 4. Massage the leg. I use a Conair Massager that has a heat option. When my sheltie sees this come out of the cabinet, he gets very excited. He stretches out on the floor and flexes his arthritic leg fully all on his own as I run the massager along the muscles. It really relaxes him, and must feel pretty good because he usually falls asleep. 5. Take your dog on several short 15 minute walks or let her go swimming at least 3 -4 days a week. Moderate exercise helps to build up the surrounding muscles and support structures in the leg, taking pressure off of the joints and helping to increase stability. Keep the sessions short to avoid injury (start with 5-10 minutes and build up to 15 -20 minutes over 2-3 months). Following this regimen should have your faithful friend feeling young again. Good Luck.

  • I have an Irish Terrier. Have you ever heard of this type of dog?
She is 6 years old. Not many are bred in the U.S. She is big for her breed type. She has a coarse reddish coat. She is extremely intelligent and is an EXCELLENT watchdog. Her personality type matches that of an Airedale or a Kerry Blue. She does not get on well with certain types of dogs. But is quite friendly with others.
Answer:Yes, my sister-in-law wants to get one. She had Airedales growing up, and wanted a smaller version of one.

  • How much do Irish Terrier Puppies usually cost?

Answer:The price usually depends upon the breeder and the puppies genetics. If the puppy's parents are purebred, show quality or are the offspring of champion parents, grandparents, etc, are registered, have their shots, etc. then the price for the puppy tends to be more expensive. Here is a like of Irish Terrier puppies for sale from different breeders around the U.S. This will give you an idea of the price ranges of these types of puppies. I hope this helps. http://www.puppyfind.com/for_sale/?breed_id=63
