Latest Irish Wolfhound Frequently Asked Questions:
I'm looking to buy and Irish Wolfhound for my mom but I can't seem to find a breeder. I've looked at so many internet sites but they don't seem to be giving me any breeders. I need to find one in either Pennsylvania, New York or New Jersey. I really need some help.
Answer:
I'm looking in to getting either a Irish Wolfhound or a Scottish Deerhound, what is the average cost of one of these Male dogs?
Answer:The minimum price for an Irish Wolfhound would probably be about $800, but they can be over $1,700. Get the Wolfhound! Those are my favorite kind of dogs! :D
So I have this odd fascination with Irish Wolfhounds and I'm determined to get one. I refuse to have a puppy shipped across the country or across the world either. Anyone know any breeders?
Answer:I know many reputable IW breeders, but I don't refer anonymous people I don't know to them. It's part of the deal. You are going to have to go out an find breeders on your own unless you personally get to know some people with IWs that are willing to put their reputation on the line for you. Start with the breed club.
I've looked on some websites about them, and many say different things. Im curious how long they generally live, and if they are still usefull as hunting dogs since I would like to have it hunt with me, and just in general if they are a good dog to have as a pet. Feel free to give any comments you have about Irish Wolfhounds, especially if you own/owned one.
Answer:It's illegal to hunt wolves, or any game animal for that matter, with a dog. Irish wolfhounds will go after coyotes and there are people who do use them for that. However, no reputable breeder in the world will sell you a puppy knowing you want to hunt with them. And with this breed, you want to research breeders very, very carefully. The majority of lines in North America are very short lived - with 9 being the maximum. There are a couple of lines that claim to have dogs living quite a bit beyond that - lots of research is needed. Like all sight hounds, they're a generally healthy breed, very easy going, great with kids and other dogs. They are a giant breed, however, so you need plenty of space for them - inside and out - wolfhound puppies are pretty clumsy. They're just as playful as other puppies, but they take up soooo much room! They're great dogs if you love giant breeds and can live with the short life span. Some of them, depending on their heads, can be droolers, too - something to be aware of if you don't like dog drool. You need to find a reputable breeder willing to make themselves available to answer all the questions and concerns you'll have about a maturing wolfhound puppy.
I live on Long Island in NY and I was wondering if anyone knew of any specific places to purchase an Irish wolfhound, preferably a puppy but an adult would do. I've tried petfinder but the only pure bred or mix that even slightly resembled an Irish wolfhound was somewhere in California, so that's off the list
Answer:I listed a site for a New York Irish Wolfhound breeder, and other breeders around the country. Usually breeders that are not in your area will ship the puppy to you. I only listed the link, but I would suggest that you do further research on the breeders that I provided, just to be on the safe side. Also you can try petfinder.com, link also listed in the sources.
