  • Italian greyhound...?
Thinking of getting an Italian greyhound and doing some research. If anyone has any experience with this breed please tell me about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Would they do fine in an apartment with walks or do they need a backyard?
Answer:Italian Greyhounds are very tiny with tiny little bones that break easily. If you get one of these, you will need to be VERY careful with it and not allow it to jump down from ANYTHING. I often joke that these guys need harnesses with parachutes. I have seen several that have had both front legs broken as puppies from something as simple as jumping down from a couch. They also tend to be nervous, so if you get one, good socialization is paramount. You also need to evaluate the parents for personality: don't get one from a breeder that will not show you the parents. Choosing a breeder: Get in touch with the breed club and get recommendations for breeders. Buy a dog from a breeder that does genetic testing. Be prepared for a good breeder to question and evaluate you. Many request references from your vet. This is actually a GOOD thing: if they care that much about where they send the puppies, they really care about their dogs. Do not have IGH pups shipped to you: go pick it up. They are pretty fragile and should not be flown unless they are in the cabin with a person. They are indoor dogs only: very little hair means that they will get cold in the chilly weather and sun burnt in the summer. They are good apartment dogs, shedding little and being pretty small. They will still need plenty of exercise, so be prepared for that. If you want to skip the puppy phase and save a dog's life, you can contact a rescue group. This will be slightly cheaper than buying a puppy, but the dog will have shots and already be altered, so you don't have a spay or neuter. Choose your vet VERY carefully. You want someone that provides top quality anesthesia and monitoring. Due to low body fat, IGHs metabolize anesthetic drugs more slowly. They also tend to get either very cold or hyperthermic from anesthesia. I suggest interviewing your vet carefully.

Answer:At the age of about 6-8 months, and then every 6 months after.

  • What's the difference between Italian Greyhound and a Whippet?
Harley is four months now and he is 4.4kg. The pet shop says he is an Italian Greyhound but his coat is not glossy. I can't tell if he is an Iggy or a Whippet.
Answer:Size for one thing, the Italian greyhound is smaller and lighter boned than a whippet. They are what I would describe as 'dainty' It is unfortunate that you bought from a pet shop. This is a BAD place to buy any pet from as they get their dogs from puppy mills where b1tches are bred from and pups raised in horrific conditions. Often these pups are sick. poorly bred and in very bad condition. This could well be why your pup is in poor coat. Take it to the vet for advice. Get it wormed, build it up with good quality food (I only feed raw meat) and its coat will soon be good.
